Mattia Balsamini photographed the GD01 mecha for the cover of TIME

Developed by Unitree in Hangzhou, China - this is an absolutely giant 9-foot-tall piloted robot that has become an example of China’s accelerating push into advanced robotics, blurring the line between science fiction and engineering. This is definitely a story about robots, but also about China’s bid to dominate the next Industrial Revolution.

A year ago, Sebastião Salgado left us; this is a tribute to him, to his journey, and to the depth of his unmistakable vision.
The quote is taken from a conversation that took place in the early 2000s, during the Milan presentation of his most recent work at the time, In cammino, and a discussion of his book Terra, with Alessandra Mauro.
