With no clouds to animate the sky that morning, I used an old tree and its overhanging branches to close the frame, while the shoreline led the eye toward the Tre Cime and their reflection in Lago Antorno. I came up with this less canonical composition, and I really enjoy how it offers a different way of seeing such a well-known location.

A brief passage through the Misty Mountains, or at least that’s how the Dolomites felt that afternoon.
The peaks kept appearing and disappearing through the cloud, never staying visible long enough to make the photograph easy. That’s exactly why I loved it.

I am far more excited by scenes that make me work for them. Following an unfamiliar trail, watching the weather shift, waiting for a mountain to emerge for a few seconds, then disappear again. There is something deeply addictive about not knowing whether the photograph will happen at all.

It feels a little like wildlife photography for landscapes. You observe, anticipate, react, and accept that nature owes you absolutely nothing. The only real difference is that you do not have to spend six hours locked inside a wooden hide, which feels like a fairly generous arrangement.

One of the things I love most about mornings in the Dolomites is that they rarely repeat themselves. This morning, clouds drifted through the valleys like a slow tide, spilling over ridges, filling hollows, and briefly revealing parts of the landscape before hiding them again.

A lovely scene from the Dolomites last autumn. The low side light is doing all the heavy lifting here. It grazes the huts, lifts the mountain from the background, and gives the whole scene a strong sense of form and presence.

Icelandic horses are some of the most beautiful and funny creatures you can photograph in Iceland.

Overcast mornings like this one used to frustrate me. Now I seek them out. There’s a difference between bad light and difficult light. Bad light doesn’t exist. Difficult light just asks more of you: slower pace, more patience, better reading of the scene. The clouds were sitting heavy on the Odle that morning. But the valley was glowing.
