Introduction to "Shadow of Fire – The Other Side of Peace"...

Nothing is more perennially contemporary than war. And the same is true for its counterweight. At this moment in history, producing conflict is an increasingly calculated act. For this very reason, disseminating even one teaching of concord and reconciliation – or performing such a gesture – should become the dominant imperative for artists and authors who have always declared themselves opposed to war. (And this is not a platitude. With voices in favour, the artistic world has overflowed.) Setting aside feel-good rhetoric, this is especially vital, given the rampant dissemination of a fake idea of peace – one sordidly manufactured by those who unleash wars or by their accomplices.

In this age of globally fragmented wars, 2023 saw the release of "Shadow of Fire – Hokage", directed by Shinya Tsukamoto. A pacifist and deeply humanist film of social reparation and familial reconstruction, concerning the impossible resilience of veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Veterans are driven into self-imposed exile: genuinely powerless to help rebuild their Country, and burdened with psychoses that embody the very war everyone is trying to consign to oblivion.

On this Japanese anti-war film, I wrote a review (though "review" already feels like the wrong word for it) on a sweltering July day in 2026. It is part of a triptych titled "The Asian Triad", which includes reviews of the Japanese film "Cloud" (2024), and the Korean film "No Other Choice" (2025). In questo tempo di guerre mondialmente frammentate, nel 2023 esce "Shadow of Fire – Hokage" diretto da Shinya Tsukamoto. Film pacifista e profondamente umanista di riparazione sociale e ricostruzione familiare, concernente l'impossibile resilienza dei reduci soffrenti lo Shock Post-Traumatico da Stress, i quali vengono costretti a emarginarsi non potendo contribuire al rifacimento del loro Paese e perché con le loro psicosi incarnano la guerra che tutti cercano di obliare.

Su questo bellissimo film giapponese antiguerra, scrivo un articolo pubblicato nell'italiano originale sulla pagina Substack della COiOTE'S FILM CRITIQUE (ink in bio) e che a breve sarà pubblicato in una traduzione in inglese sul sito di COEVAL .
