Roccalvecce — A Jewel of Alto Lazio

There are places we visit, and there are places that somehow begin to live inside us.

Roccalvecce is one of those places.

A small medieval borgo resting quietly among the hills of Alto Lazio, surrounded by fields, woodland, distant mountains and skies that seem to change their character with every passing hour.

Its beauty is not only found in old stone walls, narrow streets, rooftops glowing beneath the evening sun or views stretching far across the landscape.

Its beauty lives in its people.

In a smile exchanged in the street.
In laughter coming from a piazza.
In a friendly greeting from a doorway.
In stories remembered and shared.
In that unmistakable warmth of a small community where life still has a human rhythm.

Around Roccalvecce, nature never feels far away. Birds circle above the borgo, trees move gently in the wind, wildflowers appear along ancient paths, and the countryside changes its colors with the seasons.

And then there are those quiet moments when you simply stop and look.

You realize that this tiny point on our enormous Earth has its own history, its own character, its own heartbeat.

For centuries, generations have looked across these same hills, walked these streets and watched the same sun disappear behind the horizon.

Today, I am fortunate enough to call this place home.

And the longer I live here, the more I understand that the greatest treasures are not always the places everyone knows.

Sometimes they are small villages resting quietly upon a hill, filled with beauty, nature, history and kind, joyful people.

Roccalvecce.

A little place on Earth.

And a very special one. ❤️🇮🇹

🎨 Sant’Angelo — The Fairytale Village

Just a short distance from Roccalvecce lies Sant’Angelo, a small village that has transformed its streets and houses into an open-air world of imagination.

From above, the murals become even more remarkable. Bright colors appear between ancient roofs, stone walls and green countryside, turning ordinary façades into pages from a storybook.

Sant’Angelo is often known as “Il Paese delle Fiabe” — The Fairytale Village — and looking at it from this perspective, it is easy to understand why.

What I love most is the contrast: old village architecture carrying completely unexpected works of art. Every corner seems to have another character, another story, another surprise waiting to be discovered.

Another beautiful example of how these small villages of Alto Lazio continue to surprise me. ❤️🇮🇹

A Little Jewel in the Tuscia Night ✨

Long after the sun had disappeared, Roccalvecce still seemed to sparkle in the darkness.

Piazza Umberto glowed warmly, Castello Costaguti stood quietly at the heart of the village, the Church of San Paolo Apostolo was softly illuminated, and the narrow streets wrapped themselves around the old borgo in pools of golden light.

From above, Roccalvecce looked almost like a little jewel in the Tuscia night — peaceful, intimate and timeless.

Sometimes a place reveals a completely different character after sunset.

Tonight, Roccalvecce did exactly that.

Today, in our little alley in Roccalvecce, these beautiful flowers opened to the sun.

No grand monument, no famous viewpoint — just a quiet corner, a few pots, an old stone wall, and suddenly this explosion of delicate color.

Moments like this remind me why I appreciate Roccalvecce so much. Beauty here often appears in the smallest places, when you are not even looking for it.

Today I am simply grateful.
Grateful for the flowers.
Grateful for this little village.
Grateful for another day of our Italian Dream. 🇮🇹🌸

🌅 A Sunset Over Tuscia — Roccalvecce to Celleno 🌿

Some evenings ask for nothing from us except to stop and look.

From Roccalvecce, the sun slowly lowered itself over the landscape toward Celleno and its Borgo Fantasma, softening the hills, fields and trees beneath a warm veil of light.

There are sunsets that impress with drama, and others that move us through quietness. This one felt gentle — almost as if nature was reminding us that beauty does not always need to shout.

The changing light, the layered hills, the cypresses standing still in the valley, the last warmth of the day settling over Tuscia… moments like this make me deeply grateful to live among landscapes that continue to surprise me.

No matter how many sunsets we see, nature somehow manages to make each one feel like a first.

A simple ending to the day.

And a beautiful reminder to keep looking. 🌅✨🇮🇹

🌫️ Sant’Angelo Through the Haze 🌿

Today, Tuscia showed a very different face.

Looking across toward the nearby village of Sant’Angelo, the landscape was wrapped in a soft, silvery haze. The distant hills seemed to fade almost completely into the sky, while the village remained quietly nestled among olive groves, woodland and late-summer green.

There was something unusual in the atmosphere today — less of the sharp, brilliant light of August and more of that muted softness that makes you feel the seasons are beginning to shift.

Perhaps autumn is still a little way off, but today it felt as if Tuscia was already whispering that change is coming.

And once again, this landscape proves that it does not need perfect weather to be beautiful.

Sometimes the haze tells its own story. 🌫️🍃🇮🇹

🌅 Roccalvecce at Dusk 🌅

There is something special about Roccalvecce when the daylight begins to fade.

The fields soften into gold, the hills sink into shadow, and the whole landscape seems to become quieter for a moment.

No spectacle. No rush.

Just Tuscia doing what it does so beautifully — turning an ordinary evening into something worth stopping for.

✨ Reading Centuries in One Wall — Celleno ✨

Sometimes the history of a place is not written in books.

Sometimes it is written in stone.

Standing beside the old Franciscan abbey in Celleno, I found myself looking at this remarkable wall and thinking about how much of its story is still visible.

The great semicircular apse, the tiny narrow window, the rhythm of the blind arches running around the upper part of the building… and then all those stones. Different sizes, different colours, different textures. Some carefully cut, others more irregular, with brick appearing here and there between them.

It almost feels as if you can read the passing of the centuries directly in the masonry.

And here in Tuscia, even the material itself tells part of the story. The warm, rough volcanic stone connects the architecture to the land beneath it — the same ancient landscape that shaped villages, cliffs, roads and settlements throughout this extraordinary region.

What I love most is that this is not the grand entrance or a polished façade.

It is simply the back of an old building.

And yet, look at it.

Craftsmanship, endurance, alteration, weather, history… all quietly surviving together in one wall.

Sometimes you only have to stop for a moment and really look.

🎥🪨 PIETRA DELL’ANELLO — SEEN FROM ABOVE 🪨🎥

Today I finally saw Pietra dell’Anello near Roccalvecce from a completely different perspective — from the air.

From above, its isolation in the Tuscia landscape becomes even more striking: a solitary pillar of rock surrounded by green countryside, standing there as if it has been watching over this land for ages.

For me, this place brings together so much of what I love: nature, geology, history, legends and discovery.

Sometimes you don’t need a famous monument or a crowded tourist attraction.

Sometimes all you need is one remarkable piece of rock… and the curiosity to go and find it. 🇮🇹❤️

🇮🇹 The Ape of Italy – A Little Workhorse of Italy 🛺

You see them everywhere in the old villages and countryside of Italy: tiny three-wheeled vehicles squeezing through streets where an ordinary van would hardly dare to go.

This is the Piaggio Ape — and it has been part of Italian everyday life for almost eighty years.

The story began in 1948, only two years after Piaggio introduced the Vespa. Italy was rebuilding after the Second World War, and small farmers, craftsmen, shopkeepers and tradesmen needed something inexpensive that could carry goods without requiring a full-sized truck.

Engineer Corradino D’Ascanio, the man behind the Vespa, essentially took the same simple idea and gave it three wheels and a cargo bed.

And the name was perfect.

Vespa means “wasp.”
Ape means “bee.”

The Vespa could buzz around carrying people; the Ape became the hardworking little bee carrying almost everything else.

Throughout rural Italy the Ape soon became indispensable. Farmers carried vegetables, grapes, olives, firewood and tools. Builders loaded it with stone, cement and equipment. Shopkeepers used it for deliveries. In small villages it could enter alleys and negotiate corners that larger vehicles simply couldn't manage.

And that is why it feels so completely at home here in Tuscia.

Among the volcanic hills, vineyards, olive groves and medieval borghi, the Ape seems almost designed for this landscape. It climbs narrow roads, disappears beneath ancient stone arches and parks in little piazzas surrounded by walls many centuries older than the vehicle itself.

The one in this photograph caught my attention for exactly that reason.

A tiny Italian workhorse standing quietly against an enormous old stone wall.

Nothing glamorous. Nothing pretending to be historic.

And yet, somehow, the Ape itself has become part of Italian history.

For generations it has carried the everyday life of Italy on three little wheels.

And here in Tuscia, it still does. 🇮🇹🐝
