The Living Fossil

After 8 years of searching, I finally encountered one of the planet’s most elusive amphibians - the Purple Frog (Nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis) 🐸💜

This rare and endangered amphibian is endemic to the southern Western Ghats. Known for its bloated body, pig-like snout, and subterranean lifestyle, it primarily lives underground and surfaces briefly each year during pre-monsoon rains to breed

Uniquely, it is the only member of its family (Nasikabatrachidae) and is closely related to frogs found in the Seychelles, providing evidence of India’s ancient land connection to Seychelles and the supercontinent “Gondwana” over 100 million years ago.

The species was only described by science in 2003 and faces threats from habitat loss and limited distribution.

Portrait of a Maasai giraffe | Maasai Mara, Kenya

Did you know that there are 3 species of giraffes found in Kenya?

The Maasai giraffe is the most abundant, then you also have the Rothschild’s giraffe and the Reticulated giraffe. One can easily tell the species apart based on the pattern of the patches

Malabar Torrent Toad (Blaira ornata)

This amazing creature was on my bucket list for the longest time.
I was lucky to be able to photograph not just one, but FIVE of these super cool, extremely rare toads on two consecutive nights out herping in Coorg.

These toads are endemic to the Western Ghats and are usually found near streams and waterfalls.
The top of the toad is usually dark grey-black and the underbelly has these amazing red patches with yellow spots.

Another one from my trip to Kabini in March 2023.
We were super lucky to come across this gorgeous leopard near a water hole, and we were even luckier when he came up on the bund in order for us to get this eye-level shot

Had this incredible sighting in March of a tigress with her 2 cubs in Kabini.
As you can see, one cub is already quite bold, just like mum. However, the other one is still very shy and refused to come out in the open.
It was absolutely amazing to see the next generation of tigers in Kabini and can’t wait to track these little guys through their lives

Indian Scimitar Babbler

Found near forests throughout peninsula India, this elusive bird’s calls are often heard, though they are difficult to see, let alone photograph.
The name is derived from the long “scimitar” shaped beak.

This little chap came to get a drink of water on a hot mid-March day and I was so lucky to have had my camera near me at the time..

The Black Giant Squirrel (Ratufa bicolor), formerly known as the Malayan Giant Squirrel is found from the east of Nepal, through the North-East of India, all the way down to Indonesia.
These are among the four species in the genus “Ratufa”, three of which are found in India.
These diurnal, arboreal dwellers are listed as “Near Threatened” on the IUCN scale, mainly due to habitat loss and fragmented forest patches that make it difficult for them to move from one place to another.
