Growing up, I was always afraid of the darkness and what lay within it. Tales of cult rituals would keep me awake at night, sweating in fear as my imagination conjured up horrific images of sinister worshipers performing unspeakable acts beneath the cover of moonless nights. But as I grew older, that irrational terror developed into a fascination with the macabre ceremonies and their mysterious allure. My curiosity led me down a dark path where the lines between reality and fantasy blurred together in an eerie haze. And now, armed with my camera, I seek out those moments - ones fuelled by chaos, terror and death- to capture them forever in vivid detail for others to gaze upon with trepidation or awe. It's become an obsession; one that both frightens yet thrills me beyond measure.

Kandanar Kelan Theyyam

The story behind the origin of Kandanar Kelan goes like this. A person called kelan who hail from theeya caste came to a hilly area in search of his livelyhood through farming. One day a bit intoxicated, he set fire to shrubs in order to clean up the place.Unexpectedly, the fire spread off and kelan was in the midst, fire all around him. There was no way to escape and kelan climbed a tree as a last resort. Alas, there was a snake on the tree. Kelan and snake fell into the burning fire.Kelan met with death along the snake. It was the time when Wayanatt kulavan had set out for his daily hunting and he happened to pass through this area.
Vayanatt kulavan on seeing the burnt body of Kandanar Kelan, touched his body with his bow. Kelan got his life back immediately. Kandanar Kelan who got a rebirth befriended with Wayanatt Kulavan. Thus Kandanar Kelan also become devine and started being performed as Theyyam. As Kelan was found in the forest fire, he was called Kandanar Kelan. Before the Vellattom of Kandanar Kelan, the hunters would go to the forest and return back with their catch. One of the catch is burnt in the fire and theyyam performance include an enact of intake of these meat.

During this period, devout men from the nearby districts and villages around Thootukodi undergo a 41-day fast.

Dussehra is the time of the year when they assume the guise of various gods and goddesses like Kali, Shiva, Vishnu, and even as monkeys, kings and other characters from popular mythological tales. Decked up in colourful attire teamed with bling jewellery and wearing waistlength hair wig, the devotees go around the village.

Self manifested Goddess Kali.

Next to Mysore in Karnataka, the Dussehra festival is celebrated in an unimaginably grand manner in Kulasai. Unlike the other places where Goddess Durga is celebrated in different forms of her incarnations, here in Kulasai, the devotees themselves dress up like Kali and other forms of Gods and Goddesses and offer prayers to the Goddess Mutharamman.

This is my new favourite mountains.

One of the last bastions of Tibetan Buddhism, Zanskar in northern India is a high-altitude semi-desert, home to fabled monasteries, whitewashed villages, glacial mountains and savage gorges. Gumbo Ranjan, or God’s Mountain, is an imposing, solitary peak located in the remote Kargyak Valley, and is one of the most sacred sites for Zanskari Buddhists.

Around 4-5 days before the main Holi festival,
Lathmar Holi is celebrated by the folks of village
Barsana and Nandgaon.
Legend has it that, in his boyhood, Krishna and his
close friends would visit Barsana during Holi.
Krishna, being the kind-hearted prankster he was,
playfully smeared Radha's face with colour.
Witnessing this scene, Barsana's elderly females
displayed their annoyance by forcibly driving
Krishna and his gang away with their lathis from the
village.
The dwellers of Barsana and Nandgaon
commemorate the bygone days by enacting the
scene of Krishna's pranks at the time of Holi.
Nandgaon's men taunt Barsana women by chanting
irritating songs to grab their attention. The women
sportingly play there part by using staff of bamboo
to rough up the 'intruders.' However, the men come
thoroughly prepared for the occasion by wearing
lightweight safety gear under their dress and
playing their part in a friendly manner without
offending. They even secure themselves from the
onslaught by using a shield.

Transgender dancing during the Holi
celebration.
Hijras have given up male sexuality and
have been living with a feminine
identification. They visit male babies'
homes and dance to add masculinity to
them, and the opportunity to continue
the bloodline.
They also dance their hearts out on this
festive occasion of Holi. It is considered
that the Hijras in India are the devotees
of Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva. Holi is
one such festival of Lord Krishna where
they finally strip down the veils of
restrictions and embrace their true
being and devotion.
