Day – 5 - Satsar Lake (3658mt | 12,000ft) to Gangabal (3,500mt | 11,500ft) via Zaj pass (3950mt | 13,000ft)
Trek Distance – 13 Kms

The night at this campsite was the coldest. The temperatures easily dropped to near zero or negative in the night, thanks to the positioning of our campsite write in the lap of the valley, covered by mountains from 3 sides. By next morning, all of us were physically tired and somewhere the though of “when will this gonna end” had at least once crossed our mind.

The day did not have much rain in the intial hours, but a lot of fog. Soon rain followed.
We began by taking the trail heading out of the Satsar Campsite. This section of the trail was exciting primarily because it was dominated by big boulders.
Perhaps, it is to make up for the starkness of the landscape that KGL treats you with. One of the most theatrical views of the trek, right on top of this ridge- a vertigo inducing scene of the Gangabal and Nandakol lakes nestled snugly in the valley. Mist and fog playfully fit in and out of the scene hiding and revealing the twin lakes impelling you to take a break to watch the spectacle unfolding in front of you.
Gangabal and Nandakol are famous for trout fishing in the region. The Nandakol lake is bewitching in its setting. A jagged glacier clinging to slopes of the Harmukh Peak (5,142mt) feeds the lake at its base.
We set up camp at Nandakol for the day, and unfortunately a few of our mules, which were carrying our luggage could not make it due to harsh weather. Result of which we did not have sleeping bags and food for the night. Thanks to other groups, we could ration some food from them and for the night, all 19 of us camped together in the Kitchen tent under the heat of gas stove.

Indeed, one of the most adventurous nights of our lives.

Day – 4 - Gadsar Lake (3810mt | 12,500ft) to Satsar Lake (3658mt | 12,000ft)
Trek Distance – 12 Kms

We were told that today is going to be the easiest day of the trek, as the terrain was mostly flat after a few hours of steep ascent in the beginning of our trek today. But this day became a nightmare for most of us. The reason? – Non-stop rains since last day.

The trail became all muddy and slippery because of the continuous rains, and as the mud was clayey, it was sticking in our boots making them loose grip while walking. Most of us slipped and fell this day as it was to some extent.. inevitable.

During the initial ascent, the climb soon transformed into a traverse and bended towards the left leaving the river valley followed by a flat meadow surrounded by mountains on all sides. This section of the trail is called Maegandob. Soon after walking for a few hours in rain and light wind, we spotted the first of the Satsar Lakes.
The name Satsar translates to ‘Sat’ meaning seven and ‘Sar’ meaning lake. Satsar is a collection of seven lakes which justifies the significance of the name.
The lake is set in a picturesque setting with lush greenery and mountain views, and the emerald-blue color of the lake changes hues with time.

Because of continuous rains, I couldn’t click too many pictures on this day as all I could think of was to really just reach our next campsite and find some shelter and get dry.

Trek Distance - 14 Kms

We had just reached the highest point of the trek, now it was time to move forward. 15 minutes into the descent and it started to drizzle.
It was a steep descent below and en route, we first spotted the Yamsar Lake, a quaint little lake not very popular among the people. Yamsar Lake can serve as the first landmark that takes you to Kishansar Lake. We continued ahead about an hour of descent, to flat grasslands or meadows of the beautiful Kashmir Valley. Multi-colored flowers line the green grass of the valley and give it an ethereal look. Soon we reached Gadsar, one of the prettiest alpine lakes of KGL.
Gadsar Lake lies at an altitude of 12,500 ft and the sheer beauty of it will leave you speechless. Gadsar is located at the base of mighty snow-covered peaks. On the one side, you will see snow blocks cascading down to the lake from the mountains, and on the other side, you can see colourful flowers and greenery making for a mesmerizing sight.

Our campsite was one and a half hours away from the Gadsar lake, close to an Indian Army camp where all of our original ID cards were checked and recorded. Soon we could see our camps and prepare ourselves for the days to come.

Today was a long day. Our morning alarms rang at 5am. We started our day’s hike at 7am. Today’s trek was a long one but a rewarding one.
Our trail began with climbing a pencil thin ridge running along the mountain side near Kishansar lake. It takes about an hour and a half to reach the top of this ridge. About midway through our ascent, the mountains unfurl an arresting view of the Kishansar and Vishansar lakes together! This enchanting view accompanied us all the way to the top of the Gadsar Pass.
The Gadsar Pass, which is the highest point of the entire KGL trek, lies at an altitude of 13,750ft. From the top on the horizon line, one side we saw the snow-clad majesties of the Himalayas and on the other side, a gorgeous valley stretched with 2-3 small lakes visible from the top. The peaks that we saw from the top of Gadsar Pass lie out of the Line Of Control (LOC).
After relishing the view from the top of the Gadsar Pass for a while, and getting our refreshments we started to move ahead…only to find out our remaining days of the KGL trek were about to turn upside down…

After having a fun time the previous day at the Nichnai Capmpsite, a long day of walking awaited. We had a pass to cross!

We started early from the camp after breakfast and some basic warm-up, walking along the river running through our campsite. Just 15 mins into the trek and we could see the trail ahead for the pass and godd it was long. The trail ascends steadily for the next hour all the way to the top of the ridgeline that was visible from the meadow below. This ridgeline is not the Pass however. The actual pass begins after a couple of bends along the ridge.

The Nichnai Pass, is a striking passageway set at 4150mt with snow clad mountains lining its left. There are no peaks on its right but the land rises there as well giving it the illusion of walking through a tunnel.
Once we reached the top, we celebrated by filling our tummies with snacks we were carrying with us and clicked pictures as memories for a lifetime.
Moving on a rapid and steep descent on rocky terrain awaited which connected to the meadows below. Colourful little flowers dotted the grass here. Snow-clad mountains rose against the skyline on our left while our right hand side had stretches of barren and rugged mountain faces. The sharp contrast in scenery only exaggerated further by the dewiness of the grass and flowers at our feet, making this one of the loveliest meadow walk experiences on the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek.

Our campsite for the day was two hours away beyond yet another river crossing and not far from an alpine lake with startlingly blue waters that is bound to have you hooked right from the moment you lay eyes on it. This is the all famous Vishansar Lake with its twin, Kishansar Lake.

Day – 1 – Sh*tkadi (2730mt|8956ft.) to Nichnai (3500mt|11,482ft.) | Trek Distance-10 Kms

Today marked the beginning of the most beautiful trek of India, Kashmir Great lakes.
We began our trek at 7am. The trail started by crossing the road onto a mountain. The trail quickly ascends up and reminded us all that this isn’t going to be an easy one. About ten minutes into the trek, the trail unanticipatedly enters a patch of rolling, green meadows overlooking the town of Sonamarg. There was also a military check point here which collected essential information about all the trekkers. Another few minutes and we were at the end of civilization and mobile network as we know it. 🌌

The day was long and enough to remind us the lengths of this trek.
Going forward, it was an undulating climb across vibrant meadows marked by clear brooks and streams all the way up to Nichnai, our campsite for the day! 🏕️

DAY-0 – This day was all about reaching to the base of our trek, a small village called ‘Sh*tkadi’. Nestled in the valleys of Sonamarg, Kashmir.
Sonamarg, which translates to Meadow of Gold, needs no introduction. Sh*tkadi which is about 5 kms from Sonamarg serves as the starting point of the KGL trek.

A vibrant group of 16 individuals from all over the country, met each other awaiting the adventure they were about to dive in. After completing our paperwork and medical formalities, we were introduced to our amazing trek leads and guide. With some tasty snacks fueling us up, we wrapped up the day with an early dinner, ready to dive into the adventure that awaits us tomorrow!"
