With the end of Lohri, marks the festival of Makar Sankranti, which is celebrated in many parts of the Indian subcontinent. On this occasion, the shifting of the sun is observed, symbolising the return of longer days and hence this festival marks the end of winter. Many devotees offer prayers to the sun for a better crop harvest, prosperity in fortune and a happy married life. One of the most significant features of this festival is to wear the colour black which is otherwise considered taboo to wear on festive occasions. Since Makar Sankranti marks the last day of the winter solstice, it is considered to be the coldest day of winter. Black as a colour can trap heat unlike any other colour, hence keeping you warm on cold winter days. Even though bright colours are also worn with great pomp and show on this festival, black is also considered as auspicious just for the day.
