Neem Karoli Baba was born around 1900 (exact year unknown) in Akbarpur, in present-day Uttar Pradesh, India. His birth name was Lakshman Narayan Sharma. From a young age, he showed signs of being spiritually inclined.

He left home as a teenager to pursue spiritual life, wandering as a sadhu (holy man) throughout India. Eventually, he began living in the village of Neeb Karori (or Neem Karoli), where he got the name "Neem Karoli Baba."
