Shomei Tomatsu who passed away only two years ago was an influential black and white Japanese photographer, who created one of the defining portraits of postwar Japan. Aside from having a prolific career that included countless exhibitions and published books, Tomatsu founded the publishing house Shaken and the quarterly journal Ken. He also played an important role in the Vivo, a self-managed photography agency.
