Rútshellir cave in South Iceland - a man-made chamber carved into a basalt column on the slope of Hrútafell. The main cavity is around 20 m long and 2.5 m high, with a smaller side room that may have been a smithy or storage space. Walking inside, I felt a mix of curiosity and disbelief, it's one thing to read about old Icelandic shelters, and another to stand in one carved straight into the rock.

Day 2 - Skógafoss, Iceland 2023

Day two was when Iceland really hit me. Skógafoss was pure noise and mist, a wall of water that made everything else disappear. We stood there soaked, freezing and while others climbed to the top I tried to photograph and fly my drone to capture everything I can.

Day 1–2 – Iceland 2023

It’s been almost three years since this trip, and I never really got around to posting it. The shots aren’t perfect, was not just me with my S5, the lumix 20–60 mm kit lens, Lumix 50 mm f/1.8, and a DJI Mini 3 Pro that fought the wind better than I expected.

I was traveling with three strangers I’d met online. We flew out from Copenhagen, landed in Reykjavík in the evening, picked up our rental car, and found the Airbnb. Everyone was tired and hungry, so we just got food, settled in, and planned the route - about a week around the ring road. Reykjavík would wait for the last day.

First day was more about getting used to the scale of the place. Even from the road, Iceland felt otherworldly ; moss plains, mist, and light that shifted every few minutes. I didn’t have a European license, so the others drove while I tried to capture what I could through the window. By day two, the drive began to feel real, the country looked vast, quiet, and alive in its own rhythm. The light kept changing every few minutes, and I tried to keep up.

These photos are from those first two days the quiet start before Iceland really started to show itself. More from Day 2 coming next.

"In the city, one is alone because the world is made up of strangers, and to be a stranger surrounded by strangers, to walk along silently bearing one's secrets and imagining those of the people one passes..."
