👶 Starting Solid Foods for a 6-Month-Old Baby & Important Guidelines 🥣
When your baby turns 6 months old, it marks a brand new and wonderful chapter—the beginning of the solid food journey! However, before starting this journey, it is essential for every mother to know some important rules.
📌 10 Essential Rules for Starting Solids:
Breastmilk is the primary food: Even after starting solids, breastfeeding should not be reduced. Until 1 year of age, it is the baby's main source of nutrition, and solids will only act as a "supplementary" food.
Start small, increase slowly: Initially, start with 1 meal a day, only 2-3 teaspoons of food. After 2-3 weeks, gradually increase it to 2 meals a day.
Start with iron-rich foods: At 6 months, the baby's congenital iron reserves decrease. Therefore, it is best to start with iron-fortified cereal, mashed lentils, or egg yolk.
Follow the 3-day rule: Wait 3-4 days after introducing each new food. This makes it easy to identify any allergies (such as rash, vomiting, or diarrhea).
What never to give:
🚫 Salt and sugar (damages kidneys)
🚫 Honey (severe risk of botulism)
🚫 Cow's milk (as a drink)
🚫 Nuts, grapes, or any hard pieces (risk of choking)
Texture stages: Start with a smooth puree, then move to mashed or smashed food, and later to small soft pieces. Change this according to the baby's teeth and chewing ability.
Proper environment and posture: Always feed your baby sitting upright, never in a lying position. Turn off the TV or mobile screen completely during feeding.
Understand baby's cues: If the baby turns away their face or pushes the food away, do not force them—this is a natural way of showing their tummy is full.
