According to the beliefs of the Baiga tribe, the story of Earth begins with the gods assigning Naga Baiga and Naga Baigin—the first human couple—to discover the whereabouts of the Earth.
They sent a crow to bring back the seed of the Earth from the underworld. Instead, the crow and the crab brought back a celestial maiden, mistaking her for the Earth itself.
In a tragic misunderstanding, Naga Baiga killed the maiden. Her blood spread across the surface of the water and gradually took the form of the Earth. This is how the Earth was created, though it remained unstable.
To stabilize the Earth, the Baiga couple considered sacrificing their own children. However, compassionate creatures such as crows, pigs, and goats offered their offspring instead, making human survival possible.
This powerful myth reflects the Baiga community’s deep understanding of the interconnectedness between humans, animals, and nature. It reminds us that creation is not the work of humans alone, but the result of sacrifice, balance, and coexistence.
