The Countess of Granny's Castle

Grannagh (Granny) Castle was built by Norman settlers on the site of a Gaelic-Irish fortress, Dún Bhrain, dating to the 1st century AD, which was used to fend off Vikings and control trade along the River Suir. The site hosted a Norman castle from the late 13th century, first owned by the Le Poer family, then the Butlers from 1375. It features a typical Hiberno-Norman design with a courtyard and corner towers. In the 15th century, a large four-story tower was added when the castle belonged to the Countess of Granö, symbolizing Butler power. The castle served as their main residence and controlled river traffic, earning it prestige. Folklore claims it asserted authority, with a legend of the Countess hanging peasants to entertain herself, incorporating the 'Butler Knot' into her coat of arms. The Ormonde family owned it until 1641. Cromwell's army captured it in 1650, leading to its decline as stones were later used for local construction.

Rockfleet Castle (Irish: Carraigahowley) is a 16th-century tower house long associated with Grace O’Malley (Gráinne Ní Mháille), the renowned Irish “pirate queen.” Perched on a rocky coastal promontory near Newport at the mouth of Clew Bay, it served as a maritime stronghold well suited to O’Malley’s seafaring influence and control of local waters. The castle is a classic Irish tower house, featuring multiple stories with thick stone walls, narrow windows for defense, and a commanding view of the sea approaches. Grace O’Malley used such strongholds as bases for her fleet and for negotiating with English authorities; she famously met Queen Elizabeth I in 1593 to advocate for her family’s release and to defend her rights. Rockfleet’s striking coastal location and its connection to one of Ireland’s most legendary Gaelic leaders have made it a lasting symbol of resistance and maritime life in western Ireland.
