The peak of the partial lunar eclipse was visible over Cape Clear in the early hours of this morning (at 5:12am local time, 28th August), as seen from Sherkin Island, West Cork. Around 93% of the Moon was in the darkest part of Earth’s shadow at the eclipse's maximum.

The thin clouds in this image acted like a natural filter that spread out the moonlight and soften the bright glare to allow the “Blood Moon” effect to be captured by the camera.
A single image taken with a 60mm lens and a DSLR with settings of 30 second exposure, f2.8 and ISO 1000.

A deep partial lunar eclipse was visible from Sherkin Island, West Cork, in the early hours of this morning (28th August), with around 93% of the Moon in the darkest part of Earth’s shadow at the eclipse's maximum (at 5:12am local time).

This montage of images shows the eclipse from 3:55am to 6:21am.

Clouds covered the very start of the eclipse (at 3:33am) and the very end of the eclipse, (that was to be visible before the Moon set at 6:55am). Twilight brightening up the sky towards the end of the eclipse (sunrise was at 6:44am).

The portion of the Moon within Earth's umbra (deep shadow) appeared reddish to the naked-eye, giving it the “Blood Moon” effect. This is due to sunlight passing through Earth's atmosphere being scattered and refracted towards the Moon.

Using a 500mm lens, the camera settings for these images ranged from 1/6 second exposure, f8 and ISO 800 to
one second exposure, f8 and ISO 400. ,

My view of the Eclipse yesterday evening in the car park overlooking Silver Strand, Sherkin Island, West Cork, at 7.09pm (5 minutes before peak), showing the challenging weather conditions. FYI – Cape Clear Island would normally be visible in the distance on the left but for the thick fog.

Despite very overcast conditions over Sherkin Island, West Cork, parts of the Solar Eclipse were visible during very slight breaks in the cloud. However the clouds rolled in completely just before the eclipse peaked at 7.14pm (local time) blocking the Sun for the rest of the evening.
Taken with a DSLR and 500mm lens with solar filter.
