Countdown to September... One Week to Go!

As we continue our countdown to the start of another exciting season at Limerick Camera Club, we're delighted to share four fantastic images from our members that were entered into our monthly competitions.

Dublin, April 2026 by Jonathan Rosney
This striking black-and-white image captures the reflection of an old Dublin building mirrored in the glass of a tractor. Taken during the tractor protest on the streets of Dublin, the photograph combines architecture, reflection, and documentary storytelling to create a compelling visual narrative. The contrast between the historic building and the modern machinery invites the viewer to look closer and consider the story unfolding around the scene. A thought-provoking image that captures a unique moment in time.

"Coffee Moments" by Steve Culligan
Steve has captured a candid moment of two women deep in conversation over coffee. Taken from the street through a café window, the image draws the viewer's attention to the blonde woman and the two pink coffee cups on the table. The muted colour palette adds to the atmosphere, creating an image that truly tells a story.

"Virginias" by Mick Lally
Another wonderful street photograph, this image captures a bridal shop with an elderly gentleman slowly walking past. The contrast between the elegant wedding dresses in the window and the older man, perhaps reflecting on a lifetime of memories and experiences, makes for a thought-provoking and engaging photograph.

"Osprey" by Paul Marron
Paul's image immediately draws the eye to the majestic osprey soaring through the sky with its wings fully outstretched. A superb capture of this magnificent bird in flight.

"Time for Dinner" by Tom O'Brien
Tom has perfectly captured a busy parent bird carrying a beak full of insects as it makes its way towards the rocks to feed its hungry young. The bird appears almost to be glancing at the camera, adding a touch of character to this delightful wildlife image.

Through Her Lens – Caroline Gleeson

This week, we're delighted to feature Caroline Gleeson in our Through Her Lens series, celebrating the talented women of Limerick Camera Club.

Since joining the club in 2024, Caroline has embraced every opportunity to learn, grow, and explore new genres of photography. Her chosen image, a beautifully timed photograph of a Common Darter dragonfly coming into land in Burren National Park, showcases her love of nature, patience, and skill in capturing fleeting moments in the wild.

For Caroline, photography is much more than taking pictures. It's about slowing down, appreciating the beauty around us, and continually discovering new ways to see the world.

I joined Limerick Camera Club in 2024 to meet like-minded people who share the same passion for photography. I wanted to learn from others, challenge myself creatively, and continue developing my skills. Being part of a camera club has opened up opportunities for me to grow, try new techniques, and enjoy photography alongside likeminded people who inspire and encourage each other.

I don't have an all-time favourite photograph as that changes all the time. However, this image of a Common Darter dragonfly coming into land, photographed in Burren National Park, Co. Clare, is certainly one of my current top ten. Dragonflies are fast, unpredictable flyers, and capturing one just as it approaches its perch requires patience, timing, and a little luck. Getting this shot was especially rewarding. The Burren is one of my favourite places to spend time, combining my love of nature with photography.
I don't limit myself to one genre as every genre has its own challenges and rewards, and I love exploring them all. I enjoy photographing wildlife, nature, landscapes, seascapes, portraiture, and macro photography. I'm always willing to try something new. As every subject teaches me something different, and that's what keeps photography exciting.

For me, photography is more than taking pictures—it's food for the soul. It encourages me to slow down, appreciate the world around me, and see beauty in places that others might simply walk past

Countdown to September... 2 Weeks to Go!

As we continue our countdown to the return of Limerick Camera Club, we're delighted to showcase five more fantastic images from our members that were entered into our monthly competitions.
Brendan Cowe – Thomond Bridge

A beautiful winter night scene capturing one of Limerick's most iconic landmarks. The decorative lights along Thomond Bridge lead the viewer's eye towards King John's Castle, while the flowing waters of the River Shannon and the deep blue winter sky at the end of the blue hour create a magical atmosphere.

David Thompson – St Nicholas' Church
David's striking image of St Nicholas' Church, formerly known as the Black Abbey, captures the historic building at dusk beneath a magnificent orange sky. The warm light and dramatic colours combine to create a highly atmospheric scene.

Conor Noonan – "Who Captured Who"
This storytelling image shows an artist hard at work sketching a young woman. The remarkable likeness achieved in the sketch raises an intriguing question: who really captured whom? A thoughtful and engaging photograph that invites the viewer to pause and reflect.

Arthur Hendrick – Kalyazin Bell Tower
Arthur's image features the remarkable Kalyazin Bell Tower, rising from the waters of the Volga River in central Russia. The soft light and overcast conditions add a sense of mood and tranquillity to this unique and historic landmark.

Padraig Charlton – Downpatrick, Co. Mayo
Where the land meets the Wild Atlantic Way. Padraig's stunning coastal image captures the power of the Atlantic Ocean as waves crash against the rugged rock formations. You can almost feel the sea breeze and taste the salt air just by looking at it.

Through Her Lens Series.

This week, we're delighted to feature Caroline Laffan in our Through Her Lens series, celebrating the talented women of Limerick Camera Club.
Caroline has been passionate about photography from a young age and enjoys exploring a wide variety of photographic subjects.

My name is Caroline Laffan. I have been a member of Limerick Camera Club for several years and have enjoyed photography since I got my first camera when I was young.

I enjoy photographing a wide variety of subjects and am always keen to try something new. Over the last couple of years, I have challenged myself to think outside the box and explore sports photography, which has been both exciting and rewarding.

Photography continues to inspire me, and I love learning from fellow club members and sharing experiences along the way.

I look forward to seeing even more women joining the club and becoming part of our wonderful photography community.

Countdown to September... 3 Weeks to Go!

As we continue our countdown to the return of Limerick Camera Club, we're delighted to share five wonderful images from our members that were entered into our monthly competitions.

Denis Ryan presents a superb old-world portrait of a bearded man standing in an old house, lantern in hand, dressed in period clothing and carrying a pistol. It's a thought-provoking image that immediately sparks curiosity and invites the viewer to imagine the story behind the character.

Kacper Mulik has captured a magnificent stag in a striking wildlife portrait. Positioned centre stage with its impressive antlers commanding attention, the image is beautifully composed with no distractions, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on this majestic animal.

David Markham shares a stunning black and white image from the Clare Glens. Using a slow shutter speed, he has transformed the flowing water into a silky, ethereal cascade, creating a peaceful and timeless landscape.

John Edgeworth has beautifully captured a fireworks display over Limerick City. Taken from Clancy's Strand and looking across the River Shannon towards St Mary's Cathedral, the image combines colour, light, and one of the city's most iconic landmarks.

Thomas McLellan transports us to the tranquillity of Gougane Barra, where a perfectly still morning allowed him to capture the church reflected in the water, framed by misty surroundings. A beautiful and atmospheric landscape image.

This week, we're delighted to feature Mary Leonard in our Through Her Lens series, celebrating the talented women of Limerick Camera Club.

Mary's chosen image holds a special place in her heart as it was taken at the beginning of her photography journey. While she may not consider it her best photograph, it represents the start of an exciting and rewarding hobby, one that continues to grow through learning, practice, and the support of fellow club members.
Inspired by the beauty of nature and the joy of capturing special moments, Mary shares how photography has opened up a new world of creativity and achievement.

This is my favourite picture which I took at the beginning of my photography journey. It probably is not the best picture, but it is very unique to me as it was the start of my exciting hobby. Waterfalls are magical places; they soothe the body and ease the mind. The sound of the water is an endless song, and it must have taken years for it to look so beautiful with all the different colours and features. With the knowledge I am receiving from the members of the Camera Club, I will hopefully improve my technique and skill. I am delighted and excited to use my camera with all the knowledge I am acquiring.

The feeling of accomplishment when you take a good photo is indescribable, just like winning a very important match where you have put in all the important effort and work. Everyone can do it so give it a try in 2026!

With only four weeks to go until we are back, the countdown is truly on! Here's another selection of fantastic images from the talented men of Limerick Camera Club.

Des Crowley presents a wonderfully creative image of his Leica camera. Although his wife is holding it, only the camera and her hands are in focus, making the viewer's eye immediately settle on the subject. The muted tones add to the impact of this clever and beautifully executed shot.

Ivan O'Riordan captures all the intensity of rugby action in a great sporting image. The players in red are doing their utmost to win possession, while the players in blue are equally determined not to let them. With every eye fixed firmly on the ball, the image perfectly conveys the drama and focus of the moment.

Paul Harrison takes us to Spain with his striking black and white photograph, "Towers of Barcelona." Three strong tower structures dominate the scene against the city's backdrop, while a moody sky adds atmosphere and strength to this impressive architectural image.

Gerard O'Halloran brings us to a day at Ballysteen, where horses and jockeys are captured in action. It's a wonderful glimpse into the excitement, energy and tradition of the event.

Michael Parkinson rounds off this collection with his superb image, "Up and Over." Capturing an athlete at the peak of a high jump, his body is almost perfectly horizontal as he clears the bar. It's a remarkable display of timing, athleticism and photographic skill.

Through Her Lens - Rita Scully

This week, we're delighted to feature Rita Scully in our Through Her Lens series, celebrating the talented women of Limerick Camera Club.

Rita joined the club this year and has embraced the opportunity to learn, develop her skills, and explore the many creative possibilities that photography offers. Her chosen image, a striking photograph of a New York skyscraper, captures both the scale of the city and her fascination with perspective, light, and composition.

For Rita, photography is about more than recording a moment. It's about capturing the memories, emotions, and experiences connected to that moment, allowing them to be relived long after the shutter has clicked.

Rita Scully:
The photo I picked is an image of one of the skyscrapers in New York. That day I was trying out a new camera and the technique of just getting that very visual height of the building in, almost a feeling of infinity...taking that literal "skyscraper" idea.

For that image I was down quite low at the base of the building and had the camera physically on the face of the building. I knew I was shooting into the sunny blue sky, but I wanted to capture the feel of heat of the sun that day.

I was using a Cannon EOS250D camera with a Sigma 50-millimetre macro lens.

One of the things that I like about photography is not just capturing a static image as a moment in time but with that image you were also capturing your thoughts, feelings and memories of that day, the people you were with and how you felt. One of the things I like most in looking back at old photos is triggering those memories and enjoying those days again.

I only joined Limerick camera club this year but I guess the biggest thing I have learned is I don't know much about photography and my skill level is low, but I've enjoyed seeing all of the possibilities that are there and the opportunities that lie ahead as I continue to build my skills and stretch my ability in photography.

As we continue our countdown to the start of another exciting season at Limerick Camera Club, we're delighted to share five wonderful images from our male members that were entered into our monthly competitions.

"Black Valley" county Kerry by Billy Connell is a stunning black and white landscape featuring a moody sky, a lone tree, and an old cottage, creating a timeless image of one of Ireland's most iconic locations.

Goldfinches in Flight by James Graham captures a split-second moment between two birds in flight, with one bird dominant and wings fully spread, making for a dynamic and beautifully timed wildlife image.

Aurora at Poulnabrone Dolmen by Matteo Mazza is a striking photograph of the Northern Lights illuminating the sky above the ancient Burren monument. The vibrant greens, reds, yellows, and turquoise tones create an unforgettable scene.

Japanese Macaque by Martin Kiely offers something a little different. The monkey sits quietly on a stone, gazing at its reflection in the water, resulting in a peaceful and thoughtful portrait.

Deer in Killarney National Park by Satis Thangakumar captures a watchful deer standing alert, perfectly portraying the beauty and quiet tension of wildlife photography.
