ANAM: Killarney Arts & Cultural Centre in Killarney was alive with music and excitement last Friday, as two talented acts went head-to-head in the highly anticipated Battle of the Bands Final. The MC was Michelle Rosney and there was a great crowd in attendance as ANAM was transformed into an outdoor concert venue for the big event.
First to take to the stage was Luaghmhar, who came out on top against traditional music band Teorainn and rock band Sons of Boru in the 25th July qualifier. On the night, Luaghmhar captivated the audience with a series of traditional reels before delivering a powerful rendition of "Killeagh Kingfisher", which demonstrated their exceptional musicianship and deep connection to Irish traditional music.
Next up was the Shane Doolan Band, who came first in the qualifier on 18th July against indie pop band Aftereye and Dylan Shortt's big ballads. On the night, the Shane Doolan Band performing a mix of original compositions and carefully chosen covers. Their rousing version of "Piano Man" had the entire venue singing along and proved to be a highlight of the evening, showcasing the band's ability to connect with their audience and bring fresh energy to beloved classics.
The panel of expert judges faced a challenging decision in determining the winner. Jessica Plunkett from the Westend House School of Arts and Deirdre Johnson of Music Generation Kerry brought their extensive stage and musical expertise to the judging process, carefully evaluating both technical skill and audience engagement.
After these outstanding performances, the Shane Doolan Band emerged victorious, claiming the championship title.
As champions, the Shane Doolan Band will receive a mentoring session with acclaimed local musician and recording artist Cathal Flaherty, providing invaluable guidance as they continue to develop their musical career.
A special thanks to all acts who competed, showcasing the abundance of local talent in Killarney. This was the first Battle of the Bands competition in ANAM and events like these are vital for supporting and nurturing our emerging artists.
