The original plan was just to photograph Ardnakinna Lighthouse with the Rho Ophiuchi region rising above it.

I first realized this composition could work about two years ago while photographing a moon alignment at this location!

This year, during the early Milky Way season, I finally got the chance to make it happen.

While shooting, I noticed another lighthouse glowing faintly far behind Ardnakinna.
I knew about Sheep’s Head Lighthouse, but I never expected to actually see it from this spot, 10 kilometers away.

What surprised me even more was that this old full spectrum Canon 6D managed to capture it so clearly.

Getting there also took a bit of effort.
About two and a half hours of driving from Killarney, followed by roughly a 40 minute walk to reach the location and wait for everything to line up.

Completely worth it in the end.

Bere island under the stars

In 2024, I visited this location for the first time to shoot a Moon alignment.

That’s when I realised it could be a perfect spot for an early-season Milky Way shot.

Two years later, I finally came back to make it happen.

The original plan was to capture Rho Ophiuchi beside the lighthouse at 100mm. I did get the data, but haven’t had the time to process it yet.

Wide-angle shots are still much easier for me to work with compared to 100mm.

This image is a combination of my trusted Canon R6 and a slightly dodgy full-spectrum Canon 6D.

Same lens, just swapped between cameras on the tracker. Even though the R6 and 6D have similar resolution, the projection differs slightly so Photoshop auto-align didn’t work.

After some manual adjustments, I got it as close as possible.

EXIF:

Canon 6D (full spectrum with LP filter) : 6 × 180s, ISO 1600

Canon R6: 6 × 180s, ISO 1250

Plus darks, calibration frames, and Lee Soft Stars filter

Foreground: Canon R6, 3 × 240s, ISO 1250

Lense: Irix 15mm f2.4

Tracked with Sky-Watcher 2i

Stacked in Sequator, blended and edited in Photoshop.

Planed with Photopills

Banna Strand under the Milky Way.

This was my second setup that night, the same evening I photographed Andromeda on February 13th.

Earlier I spent a few hours with the Kerry Astronomy Club observing through a telescope (amazing experience).

By the time we finished, everything was frozen. Cars, telescope, tripod, nights like that also remind me that dew heaters was a very good investment 😁

The sheltered part of the beach was great for telescope viewing, but not for landscape photography. It is surrounded by dunes, so you cannot really see much of the horizon.

So around 11Pm I drove to the main Banna Beach parking area and set up again.

The Milky Way was absolutely amazing!
But there was nothing in the foreground. Just sand and open space.
So I stepped into the frame like a true main character 🤣😅

EXIF:
Camera: Canon R6
Lens: Irix 15mm f2.4
Tracker: Sky-Watcher Sky Adventurer 2i
Sky: f2.4 5×1 minute, ISO 2000 per panel (stars on f5.6 single), in total 10 panels
Foreground: 2 minutes, f4, ISO 2500, 10 panels
Extra panel for me: 10s f2.4 ISO 6400

Stacked in Sequator, stitched and edited in Photoshop!

Andromeda Galaxy

Captured on Banna beach last Friday 13. February, during a meeting with the Kerry Astronomy Club. We had an amazing clear night under the stars!

What made the night so special for me was Patrick’s huge knowledge and his Sky-Watcher Flextube 300!!

Completely different experience with visual observation than looking at the sky through my camera!

For this photo I was using:
Canon R6 – 60s
Sigma 150–600C at 600mm • f/6.3
ISO 2000
Tracked on Star Adventurer 2i
Stack of only 8 bphotos

Stacked file was edited by me in Photoshop and by my buddy Matija  in PixInsight.

Same data, different results!

Comment “Andromeda” and I’ll send you the stacked file so you can try editing it yourself!

I’ll post the best edits in my Stories!!
Good luck 😁
