ZAPPONE TO HOST TALLAGHT’S LARGEST EVER FEMINIST & GENDER EQUALITY EVENT
, a day of empowerment, storytelling and action for women’s equality which took place January 16th. The feminist conference was organised by Katherine Zappone, an Independent general election candidate in Dublin South West, a feminist theologian, co-founder of An Cosán, and a former CEO of the National Women’s Council of Ireland. The event was fully booked, with 300 guests signed up to attend as part of this enlightening and important day. Women from all backgrounds gathered together to discuss the role that feminism has played in all of their lives.
In the wake of the significant feminist events such as FemFest organised by the National Women’s Council of Ireland and the movement demanding gender equality in the arts, aims to keep up the current momentum surrounding women’s issues with some of Ireland’s most brilliant and inspiring feminist speakers appearing at the event.
The conference will be held at Tallaght Stadium, which is only a stone’s throw away from An Cosán, the education centre that Senator Zappone and her partner Ann Louise Gilligan founded. The centre is currently celebrating its 30 year anniversary, and has been instrumental as an educational hub for the women of Dublin South West.
The purpose of is to inspire real, positive change for women in our communities. At the conference, guests heard from some of Ireland’s most prominent female speakers on topics ranging from education, birthing rights, leadership, and childcare to body image, consent and the eighth amendment. It also acted as a space for discussion and engagement with the panellists and with one another.
A feminist fair followed the series of talks, with feminist and women’s organisations presenting their latest publications and work, and hopefully recruiting new volunteers.
The day aims to be a celebration of women’s achievements, and to hopefully inspire and galvanise those attending to continue to seek new solutions and perspectives and make further progress in the area of women’s equality in 2016.
The Great Speakers of the day included:
Una Mullally - journalist at The Irish Times
Lynn Ruane - president of Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union
Sinéad Burke - academic and writer

Rosaleen McDonagh - writer, performer and disability activist
