Golden hour puffins 🌅

Making the effort to go through some photos from May and process them. It’s amazing how many shots I initially pass over on first look only to return to months later. It is really worth saving every single photo you take, because you never know what you’ll come back to find.

Kingfisher in the rain 🌧️

Today I spent several hours in Bandon with Conor Rowlands attempting to photograph kingfishers. A local pair of otters provided quite an exciting cameo but did not result in any images I was happy with. I’m not complaining though, it’s always fabulous to see otters.

As is often the case with kingfishers for me, this one chose to ignore the branch I had placed for it. Instead it landed along the bank, quite a distance away from me. I feel this created quite a unique shot though, eye level along the rocky bank of the river, with the rain and dark background contrasting the vibrancy of the bird.

The Mischievous Pine Marten

This one’s from an encounter earlier in the year, when I had the privilege of bringing some wonderful gentlemen Mike Phelps Craig Dibdin Marc Freebrey over from England to see their first pine marten.

Pine martens have been a difficult species for me to find locally here in Cork. I’ve had trail cameras out across several woodlands for ages, picking up foxes, squirrels, badgers, but never once a pine marten.

To give the lads the best shot at seeing one, I brought them to Irish Photography Hides. True to form, a pine marten showed up before we’d even finished setting up. Then it vanished for over 8 hours. This image is from when it finally reappeared.

Razorbill from earlier this summer, photographed on the Saltee Islands. I find razorbills have a very cyberpunk look about them!

I haven’t posted in a while as I’ve wanted to take a bit of a step back from the social media side of photography. I find myself getting a little too engrossed in it at times!

I’ve still got plenty of images I’m yet to process and share though, so I’ll hopefully be a bit more active over the coming weeks.

Local fox 🦊

Having not visited my local foxes since May, it was lovely to see two of them again last night. This individual appears to be one of this year’s cubs, and I’ll definitely be paying them more visits over the coming weeks.

Unfortunately, this fox didn’t appear until just after 10pm, by which time the light was fading fast. For this edit, I decided to lean into the cool twilight tones to reflect the atmosphere of the evening.

Vixen 🦊

Do you prefer black and white or colour?

This gorgeous vixen is the mother of the cubs I have observed on a number of occasions this year.

This image has just been recomposed into a vertical crop; none of the fox has been cropped. I was using my 300mm lens with a 1.4x teleconverter, and she came right up to investigate me while I was wearing full camo, having been hunting along the hedge beside me. She was unsure what I was but was so curious.

Finally back to the Irish wildlife posts after a wonderful time in Thailand. I had so many images to process from my Saltee Islands trip, but this one stood out.

Puffins flap their wings around 300–400 times per minute when flying, that’s roughly 5 to 7 beats every second!

Dusky Langurs 🇹🇭

Probably my final photo post from Thailand. Some portraits of the adorable Dusky Langurs.

As for the coming weeks, I’ve tidied up my hide area in the local woodlands, so I’m hoping to spend some time photographing Red Squirrels again. I’ll also be checking in on some local foxes. On top of that, I still have a huge number of photos from my Saltee Islands trip back in May to process, so they’ll probably be the next images I start sharing.

Collared Kingfisher 🇹🇭

I spotted this kingfisher on one of my sunrise walks along the beach in Koh Samui. The bird was flying between the fishing boats, using them as perches to fish from.

What I particularly like about this photo is that the fishing boat in the background has the colours of the Thai flag. While composing the shot, I actually tried to incorporate as much of the boat into the background as possible for this reason.

I tend to favour landscape-oriented wildlife images, as they allow me to include more of the scene and tell a little more of the story behind the photograph.

The Finlayson’s Squirrel 🇹🇭

Of course I had several squirrel encounters during my time on Koh Samui. Thailand is home to nearly 30 species of squirrel, and to make identifying theses even more confusing, Finlayson’s Squirrels can show huge variations in colour. The individuals pictured here have the more typical grey and reddish tones, but they can also be almost entirely white, black or even bright red.
