Gaelic Memories Photography CAPTURING PRECIOUS GAELIC MEMORIES My photographs aim to capture the essence of the Irish people, lands, culture and history. Stephen :)

Irish people are friendly and welcoming, some with a ruddy complexion working on the land and others with delicate and beautiful porcelain pallor. The landscape is extremely diverse, from its wet bog lands to mountainous regions of Connemara where the Atlantic meets the coast of Ireland. I’m based on the border of Roscommon and Mayo, travelling to all counties of Ireland.

“Each photograph is a moment captured in time” when the shutter closes it’s become a precious Gaelic Memory.

Autumnal Bliss - County Mayo, Ireland 🇮🇪🙂

A Walk Through Autumnal Bliss

There is something truly magical about the way the light filters through the canopy on a crisp afternoon in County Mayo. This quiet country lane feels like a secret passage into the heart of the Irish autumn, with golden leaves carpeting the path and the vibrant greens of summer slowly giving way to amber and bronze. It is the perfect spot to slow down, take a deep breath, and appreciate the natural splendour of the West of Ireland.

Discovering County Mayo

If this view has you dreaming of a trip to the Emerald Isle, here are a few reasons why Mayo is such a captivating place to explore:

The Home of the Holy Mountain: Mayo is where you will find Croagh Patrick, Ireland's famous pilgrimage mountain. Whether you climb it for the spiritual journey or the breathtaking views over Clew Bay, it is an unforgettable experience.

The Wild Atlantic Way: Boasting some of the most dramatic coastline in Europe, Mayo is home to Downpatrick Head and the sea stack known as Dún Briste, offering a front-row seat to the power of the Atlantic Ocean.

A History of Resilience: The county is the site of the Céide Fields, the oldest known field systems in the world, dating back over 5,000 years. It provides a fascinating look at how Neolithic farmers lived on this rugged land.

Island Life: Mayo features Achill Island, the largest island off the coast of Ireland. It is famous for its stunning Keem Bay beach, which looks more like a tropical paradise than a spot in the North Atlantic.

Carrowbehy Sunrise, Roscommon, Ireland 🇮🇪🙂

Experience the magic of a West of Ireland dawn with this breath-taking view of Carrowbehy Bog in County Roscommon. As the golden light of the sunrise breaks over the horizon, it transforms the frost-covered heather into a shimmering silver landscape, perfectly capturing the quiet beauty of our natural heritage.

About Carrowbehy

The name Carrowbehy is derived from the Gaelic Ceathrú Bheithí, which translates beautifully to 'the birch quarter'.

The Name: While often mistaken for a 'place of cows' due to the similar-sounding Irish word for beasts (beithígh), the name actually refers to the birch trees that naturally flourish in this damp soil.

The Land: The term 'Carrow' or Ceathrú signifies a 'quarter', an ancient land division traditionally used in Ireland.

Location: Located in North-West Roscommon near Castlerea, this area is home to a Special Area of Conservation (SAC).

Ecological Importance: It is recognised as one of the finest remaining examples of an active raised bog in the country, acting as a vital sanctuary for local wildlife and a natural carbon store.

A Symphony of Light Over Lough Gara

There are evenings when the sky doesn't just change colour, it puts on a full-scale performance. This breathtaking view over the tranquil waters of Lough Gara reminds us exactly why we are so lucky to call this corner of Ireland home.

Whether you’re a local or planning a visit, there is something truly spiritual about watching the twilight dance across the lake.

💡 Did You Know?

Lough Gara isn't just a pretty face; it’s a place steeped in ancient history and natural beauty:

• The Lake of Crannogs: Lough Gara is world-renowned for its archaeological significance. It’s home to dozens of crannogs (ancient man-made island dwellings), some dating back over 2,000 years!

• A Fisherman’s Paradise: It is a premier destination for coarse fishing, famous for its abundance of bream, rudd, and pike.

• The Borders: The lake spans the border between County Sligo and County Roscommon, offering a unique landscape that changes with every mile of shoreline.

📸 Love this view? If this photo brightened your day, give it a ‘Like’ and tell us: what’s your favourite spot to watch the sunset at Lough Gara?

Hi everyone,

I want to sincerely apologise for being a little quiet on here lately. I have been away from the page while focussing on my daughter during a hospital stay, but I am so happy to be back and ready to give Gaelic Memories Photography my full attention again!

While things were quiet here, some big things have been happening behind the scenes. I am absolutely thrilled to announce the launch of our brand-new website!

Paradise at Kylemore =Connemara, County Galway, Ireland Ireland 🇮🇪🙂

Nestled at the base of the verdant Druchruach Mountain, **Kylemore Abbey** stands as a breathtaking masterpiece of neo-Gothic architecture. Its shimmering silver-grey granite facade reflects perfectly into the glassy, tranquil waters of Pollacapall Lough, creating a symmetrical vision of elegance and peace. Surrounded by a dense canopy of ancient emerald woodlands, the estate feels like a fairytale sanctuary hidden within the rugged heart of Connemara.

Fascinating Facts about Kylemore Abbey

A Gift of Love**: The abbey was originally built in 1868 as a private castle by Mitchell Henry, a wealthy doctor and MP, for his wife Margaret. He wished to create an estate that showcased what could be achieved in the wilds of the West of Ireland.

Benedictine Sanctuary**: It became an abbey in 1920 when Benedictine Nuns fled Ypres, Belgium, during World War I. They established a world-renowned girls' boarding school here, which operated until 2010.

Engineering Marvel**: The estate features a magnificent **Victorian Walled Garden**. Spanning six acres, it was one of the last gardens of its era built in such a remote location and remains one of the only gardens in Ireland situated in a peat bog.

The Gothic Church**: A short walk from the main house sits a "miniature cathedral." This Gothic Church was built by Mitchell Henry in memory of Margaret after her untimely death, featuring marble pillars from the four provinces of Ireland: Connemara green, Kilkenny black, Cork red, and Armagh white.

itanic Connection**: The castle was once owned by the Duke and Duchess of Manchester; however, they eventually lost the estate due to heavy gambling debts.

Rockingham Gazebo at Key -Lough Key Forest Park. County Roscommon, Ireland 🇮🇪🙂

The Fishing Temple, also known as the Rockingham Gazebo, is a truly remarkable piece of Irish heritage and a personal favourite of mine to photograph.

Designed in the 1830s, this elegant structure is widely attributed to the renowned architect John Nash, who was also the mastermind behind the original Rockingham House and even Buckingham Palace.

This Gothic Revival turret was built as a luxury "folly" for the King family, serving as a tranquil retreat where the ladies of the estate could rest, take tea, or go fishing. Its most striking feature is the punch-dressed limestone masonry, which creates a wonderful texture in fine art prints, especially when the light catches the hand-chiselled surface.

From its position on the water’s edge, it offers a perfectly framed view across the lake to McDermott’s Castle on Castle Island. While many people often confuse it with the modern Moylurg Tower (even I made this mistake) , the Gazebo remains the true "fairy-tale" landmark of the estate, standing as a quiet witness to nearly two centuries of history at Lough Key.

Falls of Connemara, County Galway, Ireland 🇮🇪🙂

Water crashes over dark, moss‑covered rock and spills towards the viewer in a rush of white, while tawny grasses, gorse and distant hills glow in soft Connemara light. The cascade feels both untamed and inviting, catching that magical moment where winter colour and Atlantic weather meet on Ireland’s western edge.

Connemara lies in the west of County Galway, bounded by the Atlantic Ocean and known for its wild mix of mountains, bogs, lakes and deeply indented coastline. The region has been described as a “savage beauty”, with rust‑coloured peatlands, grey‑blue lakes and stone walls threading across the hills.

Much of Connemara is part of the Gaeltacht, where Irish is still spoken daily and traditional music and song are woven into everyday life. Connemara National Park, opened in 1980, protects around 2,000 hectares of mountains, bogs, heaths and grasslands, including several of the Twelve Bens peaks that draw walkers and photographers from all over the world
