History and centuries of tradition have enabled the people of Sumba to refine the art of tie-dyeing skeins of thread into one of the most sophisticated textile processes in the world, known as Ikat. This ancient millennia old form of textile production has been practiced as a highly complex, technical art-form across Asia and the Middle East. I believe arguably it has reached its apogee in Indonesia and most notably in Eastern Sumba in the mid- late 20th century.
The textiles from Sumba are usually at least 3 meters in length and can be 1.5 meters wide its important to note the entire surface of the cloth is laboriously decorated with motifs, which have spiritual and social significance to the local populace.
The finest cloths such as in this collection have been placed in as many as 20 or more dye-baths, the complex and painstakingly slow process requires great precision and an unfaltering dedication to perfection.
