The Immortals.... Chinese Banyan are not only extraordinary for their adaptation to the environment, their vitality is also unmatched. While looking for them in the streets of Hong Kong, it is common to see trees on concrete being cut to nothing more than a small trunk base due to the damage they can cause on pipes and structures. From this point, they will always manage to grow back again, usually spreading small branches in all directions at the base of the trunk. For such trees, the significant difference between the size of their foliage and their extended roots indicate that someone tried to get rid of them... unsuccessfully.

In 2013, the long-established Kai Kee Mahjong Parlor approached me to document their Kwun Tong neighborhood before it disappeared. With the Urban Renewal Authority taking over the area around the MTR station for imminent demolition, our goal was to preserve the district's unique spirit. Together, we decided to portrait the local shopkeepers and businesses that had defined Kwun Tong's identity for generations.
All photos were taken in Kwun Tong in 2013.

For a long time, I have been wondering how these trees would get enough nutrients while growing on the concrete. It certainly can capture a lot of water from the humidity and carbon from the air, but it should not be enough. The reason why most trees are growing on soil is to get a large amount of minerals from the ground. After more digging, I came to realize that Chinese Banyan trees roots actually exert massive pressure to crack the concrete apart, blasting their way through to reach the soil and water hidden in the cracks and deep underneath.

Recently, I visited the Musée de l'Homme in Paris, where many sculptures from my ancestor Charles Cordier are exhibited. I really love the facial expressions and the details of his work. All these sculptures seem very much alive. He did them between 1848 and 1856, aiming to show to his audience the beauty of all people around the world.
Although it was almost two centuries ago, his approach feels very modern.
