Subic showdown for BPI Signature Yacht Race Series: sunshine and breeze to kick off the last event of the 2026 BP Series in Subic

It's the end of the line for the BPI Signature Yacht Race Series 2026. After the Corregidor Cup, the Busuanga Cup, and the Boracay 200, the last event for the series 2025-26 is now under way: the Subic Regatta 2026.

BPI BORACAY 200 2026. For the second year in a row there was just too much breeze, but a good time was had by all nonetheless.

The Boracay event has a well-deserved reputation, consisting of a 230nm passage race from Subic Bay to Boracay off the northern tip of Panay, and then three or four days of inshore, around the islands or windward-leeward races.

Thailand stays on top in the SSL event at SEA Games

Two nation-against-nation races were sailed in building breeze and tropical heat, as sailors representing their nations went head to head in the official SEA Games mixed-team keelboat class.

SSL Division at SEA Games - now, in Pattaya. 18kts at Jomtien? Unheard of!

The SSL at the SEA Games officially kicked off on 15 December in Pattaya, Thailand. From early morning, the dock was alive with focus and anticipation. Sailors prepared their SSL47s under clear skies, while spectators gathered along the shoreline.

GOOD MAN DOWN

RIP Darren Catterall. We disagreed on almost everything, but did agree that differing opinions were allowed, and always finished with a beer. A friend who will be greatly missed.

37th Phuket King's Cup 2025

Asia's most storied regatta is now in its 37th edition, having started in 1987, but taking a couple of years off for Covid. What was once a 100+ fleet restarted in 2022 with just nine boats, and this year's regatta has grown back to 40+. When the breeze blows and the sunshine lights up the Kata and Nai Harn coast, and the beautiful inlands southwest of Phuket, it can't be beat. For the third year in a row, Her Majesty Queen Suthida has favoured the event with her presence, sailing on Toam and Kevin Whitcraft's TP 52, 'Vayu'. Last year His Majesty King Vajiralongkorn graciously presented the prizes at the end of the week, and will do so again on Saturday. The Phuket King's Cup REALLY IS the King's Cup!

HONG KONG TO VIETNAM RALLY 2025

Only five boats heading for Nha Trang (and two the day before), but there was good breeze on the start line - enough to push the two fastest boats over for a double OCS and a restart.

Patch and shifty stuff after that, and Alive and Hollywood Samurai match-raced all the way to Quarry Bay where Alive finally shook off Ray Roberts and his merry men and bolted for the gap at Lei Yue Mun.

After Shek O Rock, a VSR 5.8 with 70hp on the transom just wasn't enough to keep up with the front runners but we watched the rest of the small fleet starting to feel the ocean swell.

And then they, too, were gone, heading for Waglan and the Lemas, and the sleigh ride to Nha Trang.

2025 CHINA COAST REGATTA - SUNSHINE AND SAUCY BREEZE

It's always worth getting wet! However, this time the rain squalls were merely short and sharp (except for the one on Sunday morning that nearly drowned the photographer but spared the fleet!). Three days of good sailing breeze and buckets of sun. So, who forgot to re-apply the sunscreen? (Guilty).

The proper mix of islands and round-the-cans courses, just like it said in the brochure.

One more thing: a big shout out to my camera boat drivers, Chris Nowell and Rene Thiel. Yachting photography depends so heavily on the boat driver. Not too close, not too far away. Right angle, right place, right speed, right moment. Can't do this stuff without a team of two. Thank you.

2025 BMW AUTUMN REAGTTA - A FABULOUS START TO THE NEW SAILING SEASON

It's always worth getting wet - but not called for this time! This was Hong Kong in her very best party frock, sun shining, breeze blowing, and the cleanest air we've seen in ages. No joke, James, it doesn't get any better than this.

A very nervous start, though, with a distinct lack of breeze which rectified itself at just the right moment - start time! 8-10 knots across flat water made for top quality racing for the 96 boats and 500 sailors.

Sunday had a delayed start with an AP on shore (wind took a lie-in), but the rest of the day was, once again, picture perfect and plain sailing.
