I initially created this post as a tongue-in-cheek joke, placing myself alongside some of the most celebrated artists. I don’t like to take myself too seriously, so after the initial fun I had creating this, I had a moment of fear at the thought that I could even jokingly suggest that I belong next to these artists.
This lead me to examine my own challenges with self promotion and self belief. While it may not seem like it on Instagram, I feel much more at ease discussing my teaching practice and celebrating the creativity of others, than I do talking about my own art practice.
This is slowly changing as I rid myself of these limiting thoughts and look at the reality of the situation. I have been making art for over 26 years and I’m very serious about it.
I’ve built up a substantial body of work that regularly sells and hangs in homes around the world. A benefit of living in Hong Kong, where people often buy work and then move abroad. I am so happy to be constantly creating, experimenting and evolving as an artist.
The artists I have chosen to include in this post have profoundly influenced me. Many of the women artists from the Renaissance were trailblazers in their time. I admire them for their skill and process, whilst other more modern artists have inspired me through their bold use of colour and their ability to change and keep pushing boundaries, rather than accept being pigeonholed for one style.
Amid today’s conversations about AI, I am excited by the potential across various industries. However, it’s clear in my mind that a computer cannot replicate the human touch, or the unique mark an artist makes on a canvas, or slab of clay. The value of human created art is irreplaceable. As we navigate an era where we might be losing skills by bypassing hard work in many areas of life, I am committed to pushing myself creatively.
Currently, I’m working on a new collection of oil paintings which will take time to compete. In the meantime I invite you to scroll and enjoy these three paintings from my previous collections.
Should you wish to enjoy them long term feel free to reach out for a viewing.
