“I’m a girl born in Hong Kong, but honestly I spent most of my growing-up years in other cities. That’s why I can really feel how different the subculture scene here is compared to elsewhere.

Being part of the subculture crowd in Hong Kong feels pretty lonely to me. Sure, you see quite a few people dressed in cool, edgy ways around the city, but to me their “standing out” never feels sharp enough, never goes all the way. Maybe it’s because this place itself doesn’t really encourage — or even allow — people to show their uniqueness too much.

Back when I was seventeen, right before Halloween, I made this whole outfit myself: I stuck plumbing pipes onto clothes, full-on cyberpunk vibe. I wore it out on the street. Nobody said anything to my face, but the way people looked at me… you could tell they felt uncomfortable, unwelcome, some even straight-up rejecting the sight. While one friend was taking photos of me, this random photographer quietly snapped a shot from the side without me noticing. He posted it on his Instagram. I only found out later when a friend happened to see it while scrolling and sent it to me.
I opened the comments and it was flooded with swear words and really mean, sarcastic remarks. That was the first time I truly felt how intensely Hong Kong rejects anyone who’s “different”. After that day I still kept my style, but I stopped going out alone in super exaggerated looks on the streets here.

Maybe the city just doesn’t allow anything too jarring to exist. Or maybe I’m still not brave enough to completely ignore all the stares and just be myself 100%. I never expect everyone to understand me — the moment I put these clothes on, I already accepted that most people won’t get it. But I still hope that people in this city can at least look at those of us who never planned to fit in… with a bit more respect and tolerance.”- Caroline (嘉露蓮) [4398]

“Hong Kong was never part of the plan, just a stop along the way. But this fast-paced city has become a place I now call home. At first, it was overwhelming, moving at a speed I wasn’t ready for. But Hong Kong has a way of shaping you, teaching you to adapt and thrive. What I love most is its diversity. Here, you’re free to be yourself without conforming to a single mold. Each person adds their unique touch, inspiring individuality. Initially, I thought fitting in meant wearing a mask, pretending to blend in. But over time, I realized that what truly matters is authenticity. Coming from a place where warmth, chatter, and constant support were a way of life, it was challenging to adjust to a city where everyone minds their own business. Yet, this change taught me independence, resilience, and self-reliance.While I didn’t find what I wanted career wise, I discovered something even better, an opportunity that warms my heart and gives life a deeper meaning beyond just adding value to my career. Sometimes, you get stuck in the ‘what ifs,’ but living here teaches you how to make things work out, no matter what. Hong Kong didn’t just welcome me; it transformed me. It shaped me into a stronger version of myself, and for that, I’m forever grateful.” - Jihane [4510]

“I feel like I’ll always wish I felt a sense of belonging somewhere. I was born in Hong Kong, grew up in Malaysia and Dubai, and now for the past few years, I’ve been trying to make a name for myself in the city where it all started for me, which feels alien but familiar all at the same time. I am ethnically Indian, however I don’t feel a connection with my heritage either. I envy people who have a place or a group they can call home. Constantly moving cities, schools, and apartments, has made me feel fractured and ever-changing. The flipside of it all is I’m able to move through life quickly and embrace change - it’s all that I’ve ever known. I feel like Hong Kong as a city is the same way. I am however, able to find an identity in my artwork. Art-making is world-making. No matter it be digital, painting, or music, I am crafting an identity for myself based on my experience as a third culture kid. And it’s always touching that people resonate with my creations no matter what place or generation they’re from. I hope to create my own home through the life I lead and the people I’ve surrounded myself with. And one day I won’t have to wish I belonged somewhere anymore.” - Farhana J [4510]
