“Moving to Lantau was honestly one of the best decisions I've ever made. The city life in Kowloon—and even in the Philippines—was just too hectic for me and the apartments were so small. It was like a whole new world opened up, the relaxed and country atmosphere of Lantau being exactly what I needed to truly enjoy and fall in love with Hong Kong. It's amazing how being surrounded by nature can do wonders for the soul. And you know what's even better? There's a vibrant Filipino community in Lantau. We've formed close-knit communities that nurture our traditions and give us that sense of belonging as Filipinos. It's like having a little slice of home right here in Hong Kong.”

"When I was 12, my family and I moved to Hong Kong. It was quite a struggle when I was in school because I was the only non-Chinese kid in my class. Being the odd one out, I experienced being bullied by my classmates to the point that I didn’t even want to go to school anymore. But after three years, I was fortunate enough to have learned their language just by hearing it every single day. That's when everything changed and my bullies became my friends in the end. Having my family around and coming home to them was that part of the day that I looked forward to every single day.”

“I've been here for the past 32 years, and Hong Kong feels like my second home. Though the city is considered one of the most expensive cities, life is easier as long as you know where you stand. In terms of people, yes, there are times when we experience racism, but otherwise, it’s a pleasant city to live in. When you’re in a different country, you have to adopt their culture and respect what they’re used to, as well as the way they live. My whole family is happy living in this lovely city.”

"Living in Hong Kong as a Filipino makes me miss my home country even more. I still miss home-cooked Filipino food and the camaraderie of friends and family. It also makes me sad to realise just how inefficient the system of governance is back home, compared to the reliability of the Hong Kong system. I guess the best thing I can say about Hong Kong though is that it’s the place where I was able to find and raise a family of my own. We're still a work in progress—but isn't that what life is about?"

"Being a Filipino in Hong Kong, it's sad to see how racism is still an ongoing issue up to now. Some people here genuinely believe that all Filipinos are mountain dwellers. And just because we've got slightly darker skin, they jump to all sorts of conclusions. I think I’m one of the lucky few though who faces less discrimination because of my ability to speak Cantonese. It's like a shield that keeps the prejudice at bay, and I've found it way easier to make genuine connections with people because of it."

Filipinos of Hong Kong is a small-scale new media art project that aims to document the unique experiences and stories of fellow Filipinos who have made—or are currently trying to make—their home in Hong Kong, spreading awareness about what it’s like to be a Filipino living in the region.

Through this visual catalogue, the creator hopes to form a virtual community of not only Filipinos but also other ethnic minorities residing in Hong Kong wherein these people can feel seen, heard, appreciated, and validated, promoting a sense of belonging and solidarity amidst diversity.
