翁維銓遊走天下五十多年,過著行僧般的取經生涯;以鏡頭捕捉自然界每一 道風景,以拼貼書寫一張張警世光影言詞。翁維銓攝影作品光譜宏大,涵蓋見證歷史事件、風俗文化的寫實主義、主觀構成的實驗攝影及充滿中國道家哲思的詩意圖像。資深香港電影研究學者羅卡認為翁維銓每一本攝影集,都是拍攝經年、製作精美,仿如製作一部影片; 這也是他以影像和文字記錄生命、表現思想的一種方式,盛載著對人、社會、歷史、文化的透視觀察,對現狀和過去的關懷和批評, 同情和悲憤。
每一個鏡頭開合、碰觸都是攝影師過往豐盈生活體驗的種種反照;隨著時間流逝,心靈會慢慢得到滋潤。當今天的香港處於風雨如晦之際,誠邀大家睜開雙眼,欣賞前輩留下來種種視覺足印;高瞻遠矚是一種踏實表態,期待美好明天的來臨。
《「天、 地、人」翁維銓作品展 》將展現掌鏡者既是關懷世界的人道主義者, 亦以其獨特表現方式體現當代攝影藝術不同的發展方向。是次展覽由「光影作坊」主辦,展出他過去半世紀約三百幅照片 (1966 至今),分為三個大類 - 天、 地和人,共有十二組作品。

畫意攝影主義 (Pictorialism) 源於 1886 年英國學者彼得亨利‧艾默生(Peter Page 2 of 3nry Emerson) 一篇「攝影:一種繪畫藝術 Photo: A Pictorial Art」論文。當時, 法國和英國攝影師嘗試製作與學院派繪畫模似的照片;畫意攝影以唯美繪畫風格表達人文美及自然美,是現代攝影重要表現手法。 翁維銓自幼閱讀莊子《秋水篇》,後來在 1989 年發展成一闕影像與中國道家哲理的對話;《秋水圖意》(Photographic Interpretation of 'Autumn Floods') 全書以書法和畫意攝影圖像表現他對莊子《秋水篇》內宇宙之始,無形無象,浩瀚無邊的體會。他的鏡頭從高空俯覽大自然四時景色,脫離塵世,放懷蒼穹及山光映照當中;觀照萬物之際讓人釋放心懷,神遊天地之間。

翁維銓雖 曾遊遍老撾、寮國、新疆等地,但亦不忘對當代城市過度發展、對先進科技盲目崇拜感到憂戚。1974 年由香港藝術中心和美國銀行合辦「人和他的環境」攝影 展裡,他以編導式攝影為基礎,利用切割性藝術表達形式 (如拼貼、照片拼貼、 立體拼貼和混合媒介) 逆流而上,反映消費主義及都市化後種種的環境問題,象徵城市人恐懼的一面。

在翁維銓歷年的人像照中能看到強烈的人道主義信念,他堅信人類生命的 價值,從而對他人實踐慈善對待,並以攝影及記錄片提供援助,讓人性從道德層面變得更優質。創作者透過鏡頭與人溝通,把內心訊息轉化到菲林上。翁維銓曾說:「我在新疆主要拍攝人物,他們的生活態度很正面,尤其我 是個很負面的人,因此喜歡拍正面的東西。我希望我的照片能表達自己,豐富自己和別人的生命。我也拍到很多小孩照片,因為新疆沒有推行一孩政策。」從新疆、吳哥窟、西藏、中國城等地方的人物誌及畫冊出版,我們會驚訝作為視覺藝術家的他對文化歷史知識和對美的追求同樣熱烈。

關於藝術家
著名攝影師和香港電影新浪潮導演翁維銓於 1949 年出生於香港。他曾就讀於洛杉磯設計學院,師從好萊塢電影攝影師、兩屆奧斯卡獎得主 黃宗霑。他拍攝了多部題材廣泛的紀錄片,從加州北部一個古老華人社區的生活,到印度尼西亞、泰國、新幾內亞和西藏的野生動植物和原始部落,還有金三角的鴉片軍閥走私毒品到香港。其監制、導演和編劇的五部電影亦分別於世界各地的電影節中參展。多年來,他也在中國內外留下了自己的印記,對東南亞文化及人民有著濃厚的興趣,還舉辦了七場由著名藝術和文化組織贊助的個人攝影展,並出版了五本攝影集:《總站‧終結》(1980) 於 2000 年獲香港文化博物館收藏。 由牛津大學出版社出版的四本作品集分別為 《新疆:絲路上的中國情》(1986) 、《秋水圖意》(1989) 、《市集:古絲路上維 吾爾族的生活貿易》(1997)及《吳哥:中國古籍探討的高棉人》(2000)。

Yung has traveled round the world for over 50 years, living like a monk on pilgrimage. Capturing each natural scene with his camera, he puts forth one after another cautionary wordage with his images. The street life he captured is like a drama stage where each character lights up the spark in his life at the instant the film exposes. The exile and relocation he has gone through physically are transformed into psychological and fated experience.
Each opening and closing of lens, contact and touch are reflections of the photographer's abundant life experiences. As time goes by, the heart will gradually be nurtured. While life in Hong Kong today offers no clue, we should keep our eyes open and take a look at the visual footprints left behind by the predecessors. Look far and ahead is the practical stance. Let us await a better tomorrow.
The exhibition "Heaven, Earth and Human" will show the photographer as a humanitarian that cares about the world, and how he exemplifies the different trends of contemporary photography in his unique way of expression. The exhibition is organized by Lumenvisum.It will display about 300 works by Yung in the past half century (since 1966), to be divided into three sections and 12 groups.

Section 1: Heaven
Yung has studied Chuang Tzes fable "Autumn Floods" at a tender age and later developed it into a dialogue between images and Taoist philosophy in the book, “Autumn Floods: A Photographic Interpretation" in 1989. It provides his interpretation of the classic work through simple concise calligraphy and poetic imageries.
With the Taoist philosophy “set the mind at flight by going along with things as they are, cultivate the mind by resigning to the inevitable" as his creative mood, Yung employs sharp insight and poetic imagination in the use of space, line, image, and simple colors to arrive at a remarkable effect in his photographic art.
Section 2: Earth
Yung has traveled widely to Laos and Xinjiang regions and witnessed the naivety and simplicity of the local people. He thus feels worried about the over-development of cities and people's blind fervor for advanced technology. In the 1974 exhibition "Man and His Environment, Yung used staged photography as the basis while employed excision as the artistic expression form, (such as collage, photo collage, 3D collage and mixed media) to go against the flow to reflect the environmental problems behind consumerism and urbanization that symbolize the fear of urban dwellers.
Section 3: Human
Through the portraits taken by Yung over the years, one can feel his profound humanitarian faith. He firmly believes that all men are born equal and thereby treats others with benevolence. Using his lens to communicate, he expresses his faith and transfers it onto film. Through photography and documentary, he shows the moral side of humanity. He once said, "I am a negative person, that's why I like to shoot positive things. I hope my photos can express myself and enrich both my own and other people's lives." From the portrait and picture albums of Xinjiang, Angkor Wat, Tibet and other regions of China that Yung has published, we are amazed by his equally enthusiastic passion towards cultural historical knowledge and pursuit of beauty.

About the Artist :
Distinguished photographer and film director Peter Yung Wai Chuen was born in 1949 in Hong Kong. He was educated at the Los Angeles College of Design and studied under Hollywood cinematographer and two-time Oscar winner, James Wong Howe. He has made documentary films about a wide range of subjects, from the life of an old Chinese community in Northern California, to the wildlife and primitive tribes in Indonesia, Thailand, New Guinea, and Tibet, also the drug smuggling from Golden Triangle into Hong Kong. Five films produced and directed by Peter Yung are also exhibited at film festivals around the world. He has also made his mark in and out of China over the years, and he has a long-standing interest in SouthEast Asian culture and its people. Yung has also staged seven one-man photographic exhibitions sponsored by prestigious art and cultural organizations and has published four books. The Termination (1980), Xinjiang-The Silk Road: Islam's Overland Route to China (1986), Autumn Floods (1989); Bazaars of Chinese Turkestan (1997), and ANGKOR - The Khmers in ancient Chinese Annals (2000) the last four are published by Oxford University Press.
