Lago de Atitlan marked the first occasion during our Pan-American journey when we left our motorcycles behind for an extended period. Typically, we’d be away for no more than an hour. Despite the bikes being locked and secured in the hotel parking lot we had chosen, after months on the road, these bikes had become our home. This meant that if someone were to ever steal our bikes, we would be left with nothing but ourselves—two friends and a dog.

You just have to let go of the paranoia to truly live, and I’m glad we did. Taking our time to explore most of Lago de Atitlan was a blast. Each village feels distinct and is bursting with life.

The picture here shows us and my dog, about to embark on our first tuk-tuk ride, a three-wheeled taxi, opn our way to begin a three-hour hike.

Back in the beautiful desert of Peru, I went through a tough three weeks that really pushed me to my limits. With less than $2,000 left in my bank account, the stress level was high. It wouldn't even cover the cost of shipping the motorbike, let alone the plane back home with the pup. I was nine countries away from home, I couldn't just walk back if I had run out of my savings. I had the not-so-ingenious idea of changing my diet to one to two packs of ramen noodles a day to save money. For Loup, there was no change; compared to most dogs, he was still eating like a king.

After days of driving like a robot and starving myself, I had stopped taking pictures. I'd lost all sense of wanderlust. Until one morning, I had the biggest brain fog imaginable from starvation. Once out of my tent, I had my head leaning on my knees, trying to gather the energy to pack my tent. I probably stayed immobile for about an hour, but it felt like an eternity.

Once back in town for fuel, I couldn't even focus on directions. I felt lost. I knew I couldn't keep up that way; it felt like I was slowly killing myself. If my dog was in my place, I wouldn't want that for him. That's where I decided I'd use my credit line I had accepted before the trip as a backup plan.

For my first proper meal, I ordered two plates. One big plate of salchipapas and a ginormous plate of fries. I couldn't even finish the first one.

The picture you see? It's after a full day on the road and regained clarity. But also, the sense of wanderlust.

Just me, my best friend, my first Corona in a while, and this breathtaking view. The first time seeing the coast, after days of camping in the Peruvian desert.

The way down and up at Volcan Acatenango almost felt more magical than watching the lava and the explosion from Volcán de Fuego. Because of the connection between Loup and me, during the adventure.

Going to Guatemala, I didn't expect to visit a recreation of the Shire from Lord of the Ring, even less dangling in the air and trusting a giant hand made out of rock.

December 7, 2021: We finally went past Bishop, where people would say we wouldn't sleep anymore under freezing temperature. Nonetheless, I'm still cold, but I have my big fluffy dog to keep me warm. Today we're heading towards Cerro Gordo, where Brent Underwood is going all-in into reviving this town.

December 8, 2021: The trail down of Cerro Gordo (Ghost Town Living) is so steep it felt like we were flying over the landscape. The sun had somehow made its way through the dark sky to illuminate the dry lake Owens Lake. It only felt appropriate to take in the whole moment: the scenery and my best friend at the back of my motorcycle. A reminder of everything we accomplished together and what still to discover.
