Mama. Maasai Mara, Kenya.
In the Mara, life moves fast. Survival first. But even here, the bond between a mother and her cub is impossible to miss.
This was a short stage in the cub’s life — before it joined the pride. The mother keeps it hidden. Apart from the others. Under constant watch. At this moment, she carries everything. Protection. Teaching. The weight of staying alert while the cub stays close.
Moments like this are rare and do not repeat. Patience and readiness are not enough. You also need someone who knows the land. This photograph would not exist without Jamlick, our Masai guide — he understands animal behavior in a way that cannot be taught from a book. He knows when to move, when to stop, and when to stay out of the way.
It was made on the final morning of the trip. On the way back to camp. Within the hour we were leaving the Mara. An opportunity that almost didn’t happen.
