Yesterday I presented at the African Futures Institute in Accra — for the Nomadic African Studio.

My subject was the “Accra you will not see”: the city that survives only in archives. The talk moved through a century of Accra in photographs places that were real, but can no longer be visited. We looked at how the city gathered, what it built, and what quietly disappeared. The racecourse of 1961. A ballroom on a Saturday night.

I told the room young architects, designers and researchers from across Africa and the diaspora, in Accra for a month to study the city what I believe: a city that keeps its own archives, keeps its own story.
That is the work at Dikan preserving, educating and telling stories.

In the past, I got parts of my leadership wrong. I focused on external impact—numbers, reach, funding—while neglecting the team. At times, programs were designed for “the patrons,” not the people doing the work.

People of Dikan.
In the non-profit world, success is measured by what you can report. Theory of change. Scale. Outputs. But it comes at a cost. My one-on-one sessions with Queen and the people of Dikan Center forced me to confront that—especially as we shape Dikan’s next chapter.

Queen leads cleaning. I never knew she had been reading in the library. Now she gives tours—explaining the work to visitors. That shift didn’t come from a plan. I missed that before. As we build Dikan from 2026 onwards, this is at the center: not just what we produce, but what grows within the people who make it possible.

Queen is the first employee of Dikan Center , after me. Most people call her Auntie Queen. If you’ve been to Dikan, you’ve seen her.

Cleaner in the morning. Storekeeper during the day. Sometimes a tour guide. She does what the work requires. Walk through Dikan—the clean rooms, the compound—and you’re seeing her leadership. I met her four years ago at her shop in South La, when I had just returned to Accra.
