I’ve been doing photography for over a year now, and the more I improve, the more critical I seem to be of my work.
The more I learn, the more I realise there is to improve on. When I started, I didn’t notice half of the little things I notice now. I’m constantly looking for the perfect composition, the perfect lighting, the perfect framing, the perfect angle & I’m looking up to photographers in the industry who have been doing this for YEARS thinking how do I take the next step to be producing work as a high a quality as them?
I love finding inspiration in other people’s work and having these big goals, but I think I get so caught up in what I need to work on and how I’m going to achieve the things I want to achieve that I never look back and see how far I’ve actually come.
A year ago I’d barely even picked up a camera, and I’ve learnt SO much and experienced SO many amazing opportunities in just a year, and that’s something I need to take a moment to be proud of, rather than constantly thinking ‘right, what’s next’.
There’s always going to be something to improve on, and I know I have a long way to go, but it’s exciting to think where I’m going to be in 5, 10, even just one more years time. I’m just trying to remember to enjoy the process a bit more.
I’m constantly practising, trying new things and pushing myself out of my comfort zone, but with that comes photos that don’t work.
As a perfectionist, I need to let go of the idea that every photo I take needs to be a perfect one. Sometimes there’s a beauty in the ones that don’t work out quite as you expected.
If you’ve ever felt the same, keep raising that bar, but don’t forget to look back and see how far you’ve come once in a while🤍
