Another drive out in the South Downs at sun set. Photographed these two. Watched a barn owl hunting for dinner and it flew very close. Not enough light for any images, but great to watch.

The following was written by the photographer Paolo Sartori, and I couldn’t have put it better:

The Image Isn’t the Real Prize

Today, beautiful images are everywhere. Every destination has been photographed. Every species has iconic portraits online. Technology can now generate stunning visuals from a keyboard. So if photography is only about producing an image, it becomes a difficult game to win.

There will always be better photos. Sharper photos. Rarer photos. Newer photos. But that was never the deepest value of photography.

The real value is what the camera gives you permission to experience. It gives you a reason to wake before sunrise, to travel somewhere wild, to sit quietly and observe life more closely.

A reason to meet people you would never otherwise meet.
A reason to challenge yourself, become patient, become present.
Sometimes even a reason to understand yourself better.

Years from now, many images will blur together. But the experiences won’t.
You’ll remember the cold morning air. The long anticipation. The laughter in the vehicle.
The feeling of being fully alive in a place far bigger than yourself.

That is the true return on investment. The photograph is often just the receipt.

During an hours walk in The South Downs Hampshire towards sunset, I saw deer, hares, red kites, lambs, pheasants and plenty more. Such a great place.
