Iceland, Lake District, Scotland tours, tuition, workshops

I'm a self employed full time astro/landscape photographer who lives life in the Lake District, UK. I own the Bridge Gallery in Cockermouth with my wife who runs and curates it where we support over 20 local artists, showcasing their work alongside my own. I also run photo tours to Iceland and around the UK and soon Tenerife too. I love to explore and travel and capture some photographs along the

way. When home I love to spend time walking the Lake District with my dogs and experimenting with my cameras and telescopes. In 2019 I wone Astronomy Photographer of the Year, People & Space which allowed me to stop being a tree surgeon and to follow my dream of being a full time photographer.

'Aurora over the Sands'

The sands of Stokksnes with a dusting of frost as the Winter Milky Way moves across the Icelandic sky and the aurora makes an appearance over the Vestrahorn. Vega can be seen just over the jagged mountain as the Milky Arch arches up the sky to Cassiopeia, Perseus & the Double Cluster. Our sister galaxy Andromeda can be seen above left of the mountain too. The furthest object visible to the naked eye, lies 2.537 million light years away & contains a trillion stars.

A beautiful night out in Iceland and its always a joy to be there, enjoying the stars and stunning views. One of the most amazing landscapes I have ever explored. I can't wait to go back in October for another visit with Tom Kay Photographic . If you've ever wanted to visit, we have a couple more spaces available. More info can be found here: https://www.ben-bush.co.uk/icelandtours

I'm also returning to London to attend the Spitalfields Art Market again later in the year and will be at the Holker Spring Fair, Prom Art & a number of other events throughout the year. More details are being added to the website over the next few days

'Noctilucent Clouds over Sandale'

I grew up here on top of this hill and it remains one of my favourite views in the world. Looking South you see Skiddaw and the Northern Lake District, looking North you see the Solway Firth and into Scotland. Some nights in summer, the Noctilucent clouds also come out to give an amazing show. Here, a 3 second photo of me and my boys, backlit by the clouds over the Solway Firth & South West Scotland

I'm in Birmingham at the NEC today with The School of Photography, giving a little talk on Astro at 1.45pm. Be great to see you if you are in town!

'Vestrahorn Grass'

The Vestrahorn is one of my favourite places on the planet. I've been many times now and each time is different, but always spectacular. The black sand beach of Stokksnes has the most amazing grass, sticking right out of the black sands. Hard to see on this photo but there sand dunes covered in grass are at leas the height of a person and cover the beach. The mountain of The Vestrahorn rises straight from the black sands as the waves roll in from the north Atlantic.

Its about as far East as you can go in Iceland before you head north again and around 7 hours away from Reykjavik. You drive the Southern ring road, passing sighs such as Skogafoss, Seljalandsfoss, Vik, before driving across what feels like endless lava fields with amazing rivers full of glacial runoff. You pass mountain ranges rising from the flat lava plains and you see glaciers flowing down from Vatnajokull (the 2nd largest ice mass in Europe), a glacier that covers 11% of Iceland.

Its a stunnign and spectacular journey just getting there but well worth the drive. I cannot wait to return in October for the Photographer's road trip that myself and my pal will be running. There are still 3 places left if you fancy joining us for an adventure

'The Black Church of Budir'

If you drive north from Reykjavik, around 2.5 hours away lies the Snaefellsnes Peninsula and on the Southern side, you can find the iconic Black Church of Budir. Its one of the most recognisable Icelandic Churches and a must visit place when in Iceland as Snaefellsnes is spectacular. You have Budir on the Southern side, then you can either take the coast road or head up though the mountains to the North where you will find Grundarfjordur and the mountain of Kirkjufell with its fantastic and beautiful waterfall Kirkjufellsfoss, amongst many other amazing Icelandic views.

Budir gets businer all the time with a massive hotel now and (unfortuantely) bright floodlights at night, lighting up the church. But, the hotel is far enough away to still get dark skies or views in the day and the floodlight problem can be fixed by throwing a couple of winter jackets over them! I've been many times, both day and night, but have never managed 'the shot' of the church with the aurora dnacing overhead. But, still I've got some lovely photos in daylight hours. This, I like and the light was beautiful and its always nice to see the mountain ranges and waterfalls in the background.

I'll be retuning later this year on our photographers road trip. We still have 3 places left if youfancy joining me and for an Icelandic adventure. More info can be found here: https://www.ben-bush.co.uk/icelandtours. You can also find prints, framed work & limited editions there too

I'm also going to be at the 'Photography & Video show' at the NEC in Birmingham giving a talk on Astrophotography on the Monday. Come and say hi if your in town, its a great show. I'll be there with the fantastic

'The Pack in Glencoe'

Floyd & Red with Rafiki (Red's mum) spending some time with me in one of my favourite locations ever, Glencoe. Here you can see the sun setting behind Buachaille Etive Mor (the Buckle)

Brings back happy memories of exploring and being out with my dogs & my camera. One of my favourite things to do! Also a reminder to get back to Glencoe as its been too long!

'Caldbeck Moonrise'

The rising moon passes behind the mast on Caldbeck common, backlighting the mast so it can be seen in the darkness.

I grew up near here and this mast was one of my daily views from where I lived at Sandale. I took this a while back. I was driving near Sandale, around 5 miles from Caldbeck mast and noticed the moon looked like it was going to be perfect rising behind the mast. This photograph is me just experimenting and trying new things. I took many photos, one after another and then merged them in post processing to make this composite shot.

I thought it was pretty interesting

I've just bee told that I've got some dates in London again at Spitalfields Art Market. I used to exhibit there and its great. I'm really looking forward to being back later in the year. I'm also going to be at some other shows like Holker and a good few more. Info will be on the website asap

If you'd like to come and spend some time in the Lake District taking photos, I am running tuition days/nights. Also I will be returning to Iceland for a photographers road trip in October. More info for both can be found on my website www.ben-bush.co.uk. This photo and many more can also be found there

I will also be at the Photography & Video Show in Birmingham giving a talk for The School of Photography on Astrophotography. Its a great show and if your there, come say hi

'Ben, Floyd, Andromeda & the Gap'

The much missed Sycamore Tree on Hadrian's wall late on night. My dog Floyd and myself silhouetted against a sky full of stars. The winter Milky Way arches across the sky. Perseus to the left, with Cassiopeia above the iconic tree. Cygnus just poking out from behind the wall on the right. To the side of Floyd & myself you can see our sister galaxy Andromeda, the most distant object visible to the naked eye, one that contains a trillion stars and lies 2.537 million light years away.

You can find this photo and more here: https://www.ben-bush.co.uk/shop/northumberland

Also I will be giving a talk at the Photography & Video show in Birmingham on Astrophotography for The School of Photography. If you've never been, I highly recommend the show. Its great and there is so much to see and learn. Also its a great place to buy kit for show prices too.

If you'd like to come out one day/night for some photography tuition or maybe come on a road trip chasing the aurora around Iceland then get in touch. More details can also be found on my website too

'The Horsehead & Flame Nebula'

If you look to Orion's belt and find the left hand star, Alnitak. Its a supergiant star with roughly 20,000 to 250,000 times the luminance of our sun. Our eyes can't see it due to how dim it is to our naked eye, the Horsehead & Flame nebula also lie either side of Alnitak. Here you can see both nebulae in their full glory, taken from my back garden in northern Cumbria.

The Horsehead & Flame nebulae lie around 1350 light years from us on Earth and they are both stellar nurseries, where stars are born. The horse's head is around 4 light years high and 3 across and is made up of dark gases, obscuring the nebula behind.

Its a photograph I always dreamed of taking, as soon as I knew it was there and after many years of looking up and wondering, I finally got the equipment together to take this shot. Its one I am very proud of and I think, beautiful

'Worm Moon'

Last nights full moon but experimenting with making a mineral moon photograph. I was experimenting with different camera's, different lenses, with or without a teleconverter etc. I'm not happy with it but I think its interesting. TBH I've been feeling pretty uninspired for a while now so it was nice to suddenly feel like getting my camera out and having a go at the full moon from my back yard. I went to the beach for sunset with the dogs and took some photos but its been a good while since I've tried for the moon

This is 300 photos, taken at 850mm, stacked and then adjusted in photoshop to try and show the colours of the moon. Took a while, still not happy but thought I'd post it none the less. Gave me ideas on how I'm going to do it better next time, both with the equipment and also the editing

Nice to spend some time looking at the moon, its always fascinating!

'Ribble Arch'

The Milky Way arches across the skies above the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct. Venus can be seen far left shining brightly and above the left of the viaduct, Perseus can be seen with The Double Cluster. Cassiopeia lies to the right of this and points to our sister galaxy Andromeda which can be seen just above the left hand side of the viaduct. In the centre, Cygnus can be see then Aquila & Ophiuchus. Vega can be seen shining brightly in Lyra and my old trust Transit camper (long gone now) is in the foreground.

You can find this photo and many more here: https://www.ben-bush.co.uk/shop/p/ribble-arch
