Why are portraits that start off in colour, always have more punch in Black and White? I captured this image today in my studio in HDR with my Lumix S5M2X and the Lumix 70-200mm F2.8 lens. Fantastic combination.

Nowadays, if you want some professional photos taken you go to a studio. With very impressive lighting and filters you get some superb images. Unfortunately they can be very clinical and therefore lose the feel of spontineity. Put in a nutshell, they can look staged.
When you have images taken where either you are in an open area or the photographer is a ‘spy on the wall’, you get images which are far more natural and unstaged. Ok, I hear you ask, what if it is hacking it down with rain? Well, this is where a bit of flexibity is needed but the end results are worth it.
Do I ever use a flash or alternative light source? The answer is yes but only for dramatic affect. For example, using a candle as a light source can give some dramatic effects. An example of where I used a flash is when I photographed a seagull flying past at sunset. If I hadn’t used a flash then the seagull would have been in silhouette which was not the affect I wanted.
So what are my credentials? I first became involved with videography/photography when I spent some time on set back in the 1980’s. Some of you may remember Pebble Mill at One which was broadcast out of Pebble Mill Studios in Birmingham. The basic principles of videography and photography are the same and this time spent with some of the best camera operators and directors stood me in good stead.
