Whilst exploring a stream in Yellowstone and seeing what was about, we spotted this American Dipper and it wasn't shy! It carried on searching for food and came quite close to us.

The American Dipper has numerous adaptions to make it suited for it's aquatic lifestyle. From a dense, double layer of plumage to keep it warm and waterproof, to specialised eye muscles that give it great vision above and below water. They even eye lids that are insulated with feathers that flash white when they blink (which you can see in the 3rd picture)

A throwback back to sunnier times 🌞

These two Mallard ducklings were quite the duo. They would zoom around the lake, leaping after any unfortunate flies that happened to cross their paths. It was hard not to get too attached to these two! 😍

A Bittern makes a break from cover and displays it's impressive wing span and cryptic markings.

The Eurasian Bittern's camouflage is designed to make it blend in to the reedbeds that it calls home. Their markings help them avoid predation and disguise it from their prey that they stalk up to or waiting to ambush.

Ever since taking up wildlife photography a few years ago, the Bittern was always a species that I hoped one day I would get a good, close view of. I knew this would be hard due to their secretive nature.

Well, a few weekends ago was that day!

Like a scene from Jurassic Park, the reeds starting twitching and we could see something was on the move. Fortunately for us, it came into a clearing, providing us with a great view of this magnificent bird!

A drake Mallard looking resplendent during the summer 😍

Out of all the male Mallards on the lake this year, this one was the most bold. Not just in colour but also behaviour too. He was the most vocal and went where he pleased, much to the dismay of the rest of the Mallards!

A Barrow's Goldeneye is a diving bird that feeds mainly of aquatic insects, crustaceans and vegetation. A highly territorial duck species, they tend to nest in cavities of mature trees

If there's one bird that keeps you on your toes, it's a Kingfisher!

Like a blue bullet, it zips around from perch to perch, looking for it's next snack. It's a marvel to watch these interesting little birds and learn their patterns and behaviours. Each one seems to be different to the next!

Dragonflies are one of the most successful predators on earth, with a success rate of up to 97%

Through a combination of agility and great eyesight, airborne prey have little chance of escape. Their eyes can have up to 30,000 lens in each eye (compared to our one!) and they have almost 360° vision
