Today is

🔺3 Facts about Melanistic Jaguars :

1. Black jaguars are sometimes misidentified as black panthers, which are not actually a species but a term popularly used for melanistic leopards and jaguars which have dark pigmentation. Both black big cats are part of the genus Panthera but leopards are found in Africa and Asia while jaguars are found in the Americas.

2. This black cat isn’t all black

A rare variant within the jaguar species, it’s estimated only 11 per cent of jaguars have this dark colouration. But while the black jaguar may appear to be all black, it has spots like other jaguars called “rosettes.” If you look closely at our black jaguar adoption, it boasts these unique rosettes, too.

3. Black jaguars live alone, marking their large territories with their s**t and by leaving distinctive claw markings on trees. They can kill just about any type of prey they encounter but prefer large animals such as capybaras, alligators, deer and armadillos.

Typically, these birds live in temperate climates in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, though different species of swans live in different habitats. They inhabit a variety of natural and manmade bodies of water, including freshwater lakes, ponds, rivers, canals, swamps, marshes, and coastal inlets. Swans are mainly herbivorous. They eat aquatic plants but sometimes also ingest small aquatic animals. As they paddle on the surface of the water, they use their long necks to reach the vegetation below.

🦢 Swans mate for life, and they perform an elaborate courtship dance to cement their bond. They typically breed during the spring or summer, with some species traveling to the Arctic in flocks to do so. They build huge nests at the edge of the water, where a female swan lays between three and eight eggs. Both parents take turns incubating the eggs. When hatched, cygnets stay with their parents for several months before joining a flock. 🦢

* There are only 600 to 700 Asiatic lions remain in the wild and they are found in just a single area, the Gir Forest in Gujarat, India. This is an area that is smaller than Greater London.

*Asian lions are slightly smaller than African lions.  Unlike African lions, the males do not tend to live with the females of their pride unless they’re mating or have a large kill.

* Today, the remaining wild lions are vulnerable to disease, disaster and potential poaching, and have to live alongside a growing human population that also needs the land for cattle and crops.

🔺️ Did you know❓

The word 'jaguar' comes from the indigenous word 'yaguar', which means 'he who kills with one leap'.

🔺3 Facts about Jaguars :

1. JAGUARS ARE EXCELLENT SWIMMERS.

Unlike many domestic cats, jaguars don’t avoid water. They have adapted to living in wet environments, and can be found swimming in lakes, rivers and wetlands. They are confident swimmers, known to cross large rivers.

2. THEY WILL EAT ALMOST ANYTHING.

Jaguars are opportunistic hunters and can prey upon almost anything they come across. Capybaras, deer, tortoises, iguanas, armadillos, fish, birds and monkeys are just some of the prey that jaguars eat.

They hunt both in the day and at night, traveling long distances.

3. THEY KILL WITH A POWERFUL BITE.

Jaguars have a more powerful bite than any other big cat. Their teeth are strong enough to bite through the thick hides of crocodilians and the hard shells of turtles.

They need powerful teeth and jaws to take down prey three to four times their own weight - usually killing it with a bite to the back of the skull rather than biting the neck or throat like other big cats.

Like other cats, their tongues have sharp-pointed bumps, called papillae, which are used to scrape meat off bones.

It's been a while since I uploaded images aside from Wildlife, I used to find that these images didn't do so well with my followers. I am however going to start sharing a variety of different images. My main focus will always be wildlife as that's what I adore, but I do also really enjoy photographing architecture, landscapes and flowers. So watch this space. :).

🔺️ Did you know❓

Red pandas have two layers of fur, a soft undercoat covered with coarse hairs to insulate them from the mountain chill, and they use their long tail as a wraparound blanket.

Red pandas, grow to about the size of a house cat. They are impressive acrobats that climb and swing on trees in their Asian forest homes, and they once sparked fierce debate about their relationship to giant pandas. Taxonomists previously assigned them to both the raccoon family and the bear family, but DNA research later revealed that they belong to their own unique family (Ailuridae) and genus (Ailurus).
