The Cyclist

I was approaching the summit of Rivington. The last sunlight of the long cool evening crept over the hilltop, barely kissing the gravel path and making its way to the grass beside it, darkening the roadside embankment. That light and darkness on the ground before created a triangular shape, and a soft cloud rested on the clear sky. Although the scene was an ideal backdrop for a photo, the image frame required an object seed to complete the elements. A cyclist could be seen coming down the rough road from far down the hill. He would complete my image frame. I waited for some time for him to come and pass me.

The interplay of light and shadow, accentuated by the golden glow of the evening sun, combined with the rugged terrain, created a powerful visual narrative of the cyclist's perseverance and triumph. In the background, the sky was dotted with soft, white clouds, creating a soft yet dramatic vibe across the scene. Positioned just off the center of the frame, I tried to find the cyclist's body position, trying to gain power for the final climb of the rough, hilly road. The contrast between evening sunlight and shadows was used in the frame to emphasize the challenge of the cyclist's journey and developed texture and rich depth in the composition of the photograph.

Originally captured in color, I chose to convert this image to black and white in post-processing. Although beautiful, the color image did not support my interpretation of the photo. I felt the frame distracted from the depth of the story behind it. The contrast between black and white emphasized deep emotions, strong contrasts, and textures, allowing the viewer to fully engage with the essence of the scene without distraction.

The photo is a tribute to the cyclist's adventurous spirit and relentless pursuit of goals. The image captures a fleeting moment of peaceful harmony between human endeavor and the natural world, where determination meets serenity. Through these photographs and writings, I aim to inspire the audience to enjoy and contemplate the beauty that can be found in life's struggle through challenges and triumphs.

Crosby Beach, the most dramatic shoreline near my home in Merseyside, offers a breathtaking natural theater where sea, sand, and sky converge in perfect harmony. In this captured moment, an Iron Man statue stands solemnly, half-covered by sand, basking in the evening's amber glow. The sky, darkened with the promise of rain, frames a brilliant rainbow arcing gracefully in the backdrop. Between the statue and the rainbow, a solitary figure stands atop a sand dune, witnessing this awe-inspiring scene.
