What a lovely way to spend a late morning Friday looking at Richard Avedon’s ‘Facing West’. A selection of 21 images currently on show at the Gagosian in Mayfair.

The Gelatin silver prints were large, approximately 60” x 48” inches derived from the original negatives which were made through his large format Deardorff 8 x 10 camera. For the uninitiated they were made in the traditional (analogue) wet darkroom process.

From a technical stand point they are beautiful to look at as this size of negative can more than accommodate such a large print, without any deterioration of quality.

In contrast, I went to an exhibition of another favourite photographer earlier this week and I came away with mixed feelings.

Most of those images were made on medium format 6”x6” but they had been scanned and then printed beyond what a negative of that size would have been able to provide had they been printed in a darkroom. I have had the opportunity to see original prints from the negatives of these works and so for me these outsized digital copies meant the work had lost some of its potency.

It was great to meeting in person with fellow members of the I look forward to our next gathering.

Last Sunday, following the receipt of his Paulette Wilson Windrush Award Charlie Phillips was joined on stage by Piers Thompson .radio Ansel Wong and myself to talk about his work.

It was a joy to witness the love and support for Charlie at the conclusion of his show ‘Somewhere Somehow’ at the Riverside Studios in Hammersmith.

The images on display were from his early work in Notting Hill to his later pictures of African-Caribbean funerals in London.

These photographs can be found in Charlie’s new book ‘A Grassroots Legacy - 1962 - 2010’ which is now available from

Following the announcement of Valentino’s passing here is an image from my archive.

He is pictured here (R) with his business partner Giancarlo Giammetti.

They were at TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) in 2008 to promote Matt Tyrnauer’s documentary ‘Valentino: The Last Emperor’

My memory of them was their graciousness and patience in what was a very busy junket.

RIP Valentino Garavani

Goodbye 2025.

Grateful for the new opportunities you’ve brought.

Grateful for the family and friends I’ve been able to share them with.

Grateful to have survived the challenges.

Wishing the world well. It’s not always easy but love and kindness for our fellow humans will always be the salve.

Happy New Year✨
😘
