Exhibition Opening: Paintings by Gerald Babb (1928–2024)

We are delighted to welcome you to this special exhibition showcasing the remarkable artwork of Gerald Babb, a dedicated artist whose life journey spanned nearly a century.

Gerald, born in 1928 and passing in 2024, was originally a skilled technical illustrator for Vicars Armstrong in Barrow-in-Furness. His professional expertise in technical drawing was complemented by a prolific artistic talent that flourished throughout his life.

A passionate traveler and keen observer of his surroundings, Gerald's diverse body of work reflects a rich tapestry of styles and genres inspired by the landscapes he explored—both local and distant. From detailed technical illustrations to evocative landscapes and vibrant scenes, his art reveals a lifelong pursuit of creative expression beyond his professional duties.

What began as a hobby evolved into a true artistic vocation, allowing Gerald to explore his imagination and capture the beauty of the world around him. His daughter, Paulette, has curated this heartfelt collection, a tribute to his enduring spirit and creative flair.

For Ulverston Art House opening in new premises on Brogden Street. 28/02/25

Hello everyone. Good to see you. And thank you for coming.
When David asked me to be "guest speaker" - by text message. Very brief. Ending with "something short and sweet". I thought that was either a kind description of me or my instructions! So - short I can guarantee, sweet not so much.

We're here of course to celebrate the opening of a whole new chapter for Ulverston Art House. When David got the keys to the building it was dirty, cold, littered with loads of unwanted stuff and crying out for a coat or two of paint. He's worked his socks off to get everything ready for this evening and to open for business. I have to say he's made a miraculous transformation. Many thanks go to those who have helped and encouraged him along the way.

We're also here as friends and supporters and customers (or even future customers). So I hope we'll all do our bit to spread the word among our families, our friends, our neighbours and our colleagues about this new beginning in these lovely light and spacious premises. So David's Art House can flourish - and so that we can truly say that Ulverston is, as David would have it, the Art Hub of the North!
