A beautiful day at Caerlaverock Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust near Dumfries, with dazzling winter light, and many species to see - whooper swans, wigeon, teal, lapwing, curlew, snipe, little egret and many more. Sunday 2nd February is World Wetlands Day, emphasising the importance of wetlands in maintaining biodiversity and mitigating climate change.

Not Alaska or Siberia, but much closer to home! The St Andrew's Cross or Saltire marks the Scottish border at Carter Bar on the A68, with the Cheviots in the background. At 418m above sea level, Carter Bar is notorious in winter for snowstorms, fog, lashing rain and wind, but is always an exhilarating and spectacular frontier crossing. I set off up Carter Pike in the Whitelee National Nature Reserve, but having not brought my cross-country skis, I was soon wading through deep snow and making laboriously slow progress, so only got half way before the daylight faded. Fantastic views of the Cheviots and Redesdale.

Yeavering Bell, on the northern edge of the Cheviots. The 'Hill of the Goats' is the largest Iron Age hillfort in the region, surrounded by ancient stone ramparts. A wonderful cold fine day with , on frozen turf with a thin layer of snow and fantastic views into southern Scotland. A glider flew over the summit a couple of times, silently riding the freezing wind. A couple of winters ago I broke my ankle on similar easy but icy terrain in the Cheviots. This time we had Kahtoola microspikes on our boots, what a transformation! Infinitely quicker and safer on iron hard, steep icy slopes.

A fine autumn day on the granite sea cliffs at Bosigran, Cornwall last month. After regularly climbing there back in the 1970s, it was great to be with my daughters on some of my favourite classic routes, and enjoying sunset over the Atlantic. Bosigran deserves its reputation for having some of the best rock climbs in Britain.

Heather honey on the comb. A busy day cutting and boxing this summer's heather honey, a pretty good harvest considering the weather, thanks to some very strong colonies of Buckfast bees (friendly and gentle) and some other bees (bad tempered and aggressive). Will have to sort those ones out before next season!

Himalayan blue poppy (Meconopsis baileyi) enjoying a beautiful May morning after the rain. A joy to see it flowering after the long, wet and cloudy winter. They have a reputation for being tricky to grow but this has been carefully nurtured in a container, never allowed to dry out or be scorched by strong sunshine. So far so good........
