Back in May we had the best spell of Aurora that I have ever seen in Scotland. It was streaming across the sky as darkness fell and was visible in all directions.

It is amazing living in a rural location with no street lights, it enhances what can be seen. Please feel free to follow our new page The Aberdeenshire Smallholder for regular updates :)

Well it has been nearly a year since I last posted, so I though it was about time to say i'm back!

A fair amount has happened over the past year. As a family we have relocated from East Lothian up to NE Aberdeenshire. It has been an action packed year full of action, drama and many laughs. Now we are moving into my favourite season of Autumn I am finally getting to head out and about with the camera. This shot was taken back in February during a period of snowfall..

I have set up another page where I will share some of the goings on from our new home. I am quickly learning how to look after our 3 sheep, they are totally daft! 😂

It's been a long time

Sorry for the lack of activity. It has a been a whole range of factors but a aurora red alert last week sprung me in to life and I rushed out the door camera in hand.

What followed was half an hour of some amazing aurora action that was some of the best I have ever seen in Scotland.

I'm hoping to get out more with the camera over the coming months. Especially with a house move coming up.

I won't leave or so long next time 🙂

Seeing a few photos and videos on my social media today of the first snowfall in the high European mountain ranges. I love snow and photographing the winter conditions.

This is Wagenbrüchsee a short drive from Garmisch in Bavaria. This was my main target to photograph when I visited the area. During the trip the conditions had not been favourable but this final morning we had a good snowfall and then clearing skies dropping the temperature to -7.

It is such an amazing area which I hope to visit again one day.

This old cottage was one of the first locations that I ever took landscape photos. I knew that I would be passing last week while delivering for my work so I took the camera with me to grab some shots along the way.

The cottage is located high above Pitlochry in a amazing rural location. It was made all the better by the sound of stags roaring across the hillside. Scotland in autumn is a real treat.

It has been a long while since I have been down to the Lake District with camera in hand. I had been keeping a close eye on the forecast and the ever changing weather. The sunset was looking like a complete non event but I took a gamble and headed out earlier that usual looking for a few breaks in the cloud.

With no real plan I set myself up in spot near Derwentwater and just watched the light come and go. I watched the sky just open up into the Newlands Valley and for that one brief moment life was just grand.

The last light hitting Rifugio Locatelli high in the Italian Dolomites. I took this shot exactly 2 years ago to the day and we had some fabulous conditions. The cloud was rising from the valley bottom and swirling around as it climbed. Fortunately the cloud broke to let the sun break through and illuminate the peaks behind Dreizinnenhütte.

The Rifugio is a large building but you can see how it is dwarfed by the surrounding peaks.

I had a big day of photography planned yesterday. A glorious sunrise and autumn colours, however Mother Nature had other ideas. The weather was dire with rain forecast all day long. So change of plan, Christmas shopping first and then a wee wander through Dollar Glen.

It has been a while since I wandered about in the rain so I ended up soaked. No waterproof jacket and no wellies is not a good idea when looking for compositions in the long grass and beside a raging stream. Never mind, it was good to explore new locations and be out camera in hand. This shot was from just above Dollar Glen with Castle Campbell in the distance.

It has been nearly 2 years since I was last in the Italian Dolomites. I am not ashamed to say that it is an area I have fallen in love with. The landscapes are just magnificent, the locals are welcoming (well most of them, but that is another story),the roads are awesome and as with the rest of Italy the food and drink is just outstanding.

This is Lago Antorno, a stunning stop off point on the road up to Rifugio Auronzo alle Tre Cime di Lavaredo. From where you can tackle one of the best walks in the Dolomites.

I hope to return somewhere down the line as there is so much more to explore.

A reworked shot from a few years ago. I visited the village of St Monans to shoot a sunrise. Now I live in deepest darkest East Lothian and from my house I can see straight over to Fife. However it did not quite process that to drive here would take over 2 hours! In the end it was worth the trip.

I am just working out autumn shooting plans, the colours are turning already. I have a feeling it could be a spectacular one!

Cheers - Stephen
