Hummingbird || Stanley Park, Aug '25
There's usually a couple of elements that make a photo really striking to my eye.

The first obvious thing that hit me from this photo is the beautiful, warm backlighting. Shooting straight into the sun usually means a harder job following the subject and finding focus, but when it lights up the subject in this way, it's always worth the extra effort. The sunlight was falling directly on to the front element which is causing most of the soft glow in this photograph.

The other elements were in the small details. One being the shadow of the plant behind being imprinted on the Hummingbird's wing. It perfectly sums up how low the sun was and how dense the foliage was that the hummingbirds were flying between. The other being the two iridescent 'scales' on the neck, a little flash of colour that looked to me like a little bowtie 🙂

Grey Squirrel || Vancouver, Jul '25
Another time that interesting light and uninteresting subjects wins. Although uninteresting would be a bit of an undersell for these Squirrels. They are a melanistic (dark) variety of the Grey Squirrels you would expect to see in the UK - though they're invasive in both these places. The dark coloration combined with the warm, dappled morning light through the trees made for this dramatic lighting.

Vancouver is a great city for natural spaces and being close to Stanley Park is providing great access to wildlife that's quite happy around human activity. Watching these Squirrels dart in and out of the shadows meant I just had to wait for the right timing to get this subtle yet intense portrait.

Mt Nelson Moonset || Feb '25
Photographing the home mountain is definitely becoming a new tradition since moving to Canada. I can't quite decide if I preferred looking at Temple in the Rockies or Nelson here in the Purcells.
It's amazing to think this face was only skied for the first time a few years ago. I think this black and white edit better shows the drama of a mountain like Nelson. It towers over the local hills and town and the morning I shot this was a quick drive around the town until the moon came lower and a balanced composition revealed itself.

Bald Eagle || Meares Island, May '24
Coming to Vancouver Island for the summer is my chance to shoot some wildlife that has been top of my list for a long time. The Bald Eagles around here don't get boring to watch and a boat tour of the islands in the late afternoon made for an amazing opportunity to get some shots and this one might be an instant favourite!

gave an fantastic tour, Sea Otters, Sea Lions, a Black Bear and more! Towards the end, behind Meares Island the warm evening back lighting and deep shaded forests made for this amazing lighting setup. I stood looking at every treetop waiting for an Eagle to be on a good perch. I saw maybe three total but for this one everything lined up perfectly.

Semipamlated Plover || Tofino, May '24
Closer, closer, closer...

It's easy to be obsessed with getting closer to the subject in wildlife photography. It's what we spend years and years getting good at, learning behaviours and skills to get close to wildlife. I often shoot all the time whilst getting closer to the subject but don't put too much effort into those early pictures and care most about the final result - the closeup. But getting creative with the early shots can create some really cool stuff. I like both of these images but prefer the creativity of the wide shot!

Dunlin || Tofino, May '24
The shorebirds in Tofino have been great to watch since we arrived and yesterday I headed to our beach to see what I could get.

This shot looked nice on the back of the camera but came alive on my laptop. The part I really love of this, is the small bead of water from where it has just taken it's beak out of the sand and it's reflection in the water. Also the lucky sparkle from a wave in the background that circles the birds head. In a scene like this, none of the things I like most about this picture could have been planned, it's all just luck and keeping shooting!

Bled by Night || Slovenia, Oct '22
Somehow this one managed to escape ever being posted. This composition was a real testament to planning and luck. For years I had wanted to visit this location and had done my fair share of research of maps and photos to find a spot to shoot from. When we booked a 3-day holiday in Bled at the end of summer, it was purely luck that provided a clear sky on the night we arrived. Sandwiched between a long day of travel and a 6am hike to shoot the same island at sunrise, it was a tiring shoot but we'll worth it!

When the clouds come down it does a lot to create some calming scenes. At the moment I'm trying to focus on details and 'quieter' compositions. More to come...

Erosion || Lake Louise, May 2023
Fairview Mountain has such an interesting form and the early summer sunset light catches the three peaks just right!

The foreground rocks were no doubt at some point much higher up the mountain and have found their way down to the lake under the conditions that led to the peaks' interesting form!
