If you are looking for a way to kick start your photography, think about trying a small, fun project. This weekend I had a day in London with my lovely friend . She proposed that we each chose a colour and photographed everything we spotted that matched. We used our phone cameras and ended talking to strangers, seeing things we might not have noticed otherwise. It was fun.
My colour was yellow

Paprika - I mixed smoked paprika with rubbing alcohol (isopropyl) and then strained it to get the liquid to coat this paper. 4 coatings and 4 hours in the spring sunshine. I washed one in bicarbonate of soda and water (the ginkgo leaf) and I’ve left the other one. It hasn’t made much difference to the colour, let’s see what it does for the longevity.

Introducing sun experiment #2
This one is soooo simple, using humble sugar paper. And that’s it. Who remembers the bleached out sugar paper display boards at primary school? Well this riffs off that and it works beautifully. I left this in a south facing window for 4 days. This really is one you can try yourself

Made the most of the sunshine to do more tests with light sensitive plants. This was rainbow chard, whizzed in the liquidiser and applied in 4 layers to cartridge paper. 4 hours in the sun on a warm April afternoon. I wasn’t expecting it to go pink, so that was a nice surprise. I haven’t washed it or tried to fix it in any way so we’ll see what happens next… I’ve got more experiments to do this holiday, so keep checking back. This experiment was based on information in 2024 anthotype day - thank you
