Why buy real art from an artist?

Or: Why That IKEA Print Will Never Speak to Your Soul.

Real art, made by a human hand, can stir something in us. Especially abstract art, because nobody tells you what it means.

It’s easier to choose something mass-produced that simply fits the room. But when a painting speaks to you, something different is happening.

You might not know why it moves you. But if you find yourself thinking about it hours, or days, later, perhaps something in you has recognised something in it.

That’s the piece to bring home.

I make art because I have to. It’s a process, not a product. Every painting involves hundreds of choices: add the mark or scrape it back? This colour or that? Brush or fingers? Quiet or chaos?

Layer by layer, the painting grows. It holds time, texture, energy and emotion. Some marks are deliberate, others accidental. It is unique, imperfect and human.

AI can generate images and mimic styles, but it has no lived experience. No inner struggle. No years of being human.

When you buy original art, you’re not just buying an object.

You’re buying presence. Emotion. Soul.

So buy it because it pulls you in. Because you keep looking. Because it makes you feel something.

But most of all, buy it because it’s real.

And because, somewhere, an artist is doing a little happy dance. 💃

If you fancy a wander down to Brighton beach, Atelier Beside the Sea is right at 165 Kings Road Arches — just at the bottom of West Street. Open 11–5, every day, right through to 13th September.
My two paintings are in there among 365 other pieces from 165 artists. It's a proper mixed bag — worth the trip just to see what everyone's made.

A fun little collage using two previous studies, cropped, layered and reworked in acrylic to keep it fresh and unexpected. I like the peeking, secretive feel a real garden has, where hidden blooms, shifting shadows and tucked-away details are always happening just out of sight.

This was me, in the heatwave, 7am, off to Brighton to deliver my paintings to Atelier Beside the Sea, before it hit 30 degrees. It was sooooo hot but at least the train had air con — knowing they're hanging in the arches by the sea now is so exciting.

Being selected for this means a lot. It's an open show — anyone could apply, and mine got picked.
