This self-guided walk links locations around the town with real people, moments, and objects, turning every street corner into a piece of living history.

From tales of shipwrecks and lifeboat rescues to extraordinary lives lived across the world, the plaques quietly reveal the layers of Stromness you might otherwise walk straight past.

There’s a specific kind of quiet you'll only find here.
Some mornings, the world feels completely still and the only sound is the rhythm of your own footsteps echoing off the old stone.

Something you’ll also notice is that the houses aren't lined up flat against the street. Most were built "gable-end on," meaning the narrow, strongest side of the house faces the sea. This wasn't just for a better view; it was a clever way to shield the buildings from the brutal Atlantic winds and salt spray.

Did you know Stromness Museum is one of the oldest in Scotland and it’s packed with incredible maritime, natural history and arctic exploration exhibits?
Even as local's we still love visiting there often for a browse!
