🎭 What makes Stockton-on-Tees so special?

Stockton is in the final few to be crowned the first UK town of culture, and when you look at what this little North East town has to offer, there's certainly plenty to shout about!

🎸 A thriving music scene, from the Globe and ARC to the Georgian Theatre and independent venues supporting local talent.

🛍️ Markets that have brought people together for generations, with traders building friendships and serving loyal customers for decades.

🌍 A mix of different cultures, independent businesses, international food shops and communities that make Stockton what it is.

🏗️ And a town centre that's changing massively! From Castlegate's demolition to the new Waterfront Park, restored Globe and Hilton Hotel.

Then there's the River Tees, our bridges, historic buildings, festivals and plenty more!

We spoke to a few local residents and traders to hear what makes Stockton special to them, and they've certainly got some stories to tell! 🎥

Of course, Stockton isn't perfect, but there's plenty worth celebrating and a lot to look forward to.

🚣 Did you know there's a completely FREE rowing club for young people in Stockton?

Infinity Boat Club is based at Castlegate Quay on the River Tees, giving young people aged 11–18 the chance to learn rowing, make friends, build confidence and even compete, all completely free!

I used to go kayaking at this exact location with my friends when I was younger, so it was brilliant returning to see what they're doing for the next generation.

I recently had the pleasure of producing three promotional films for the club through Tees Vision Media, and what a fantastic bunch of people to work with!

Here's their new membership film, showing just some of the brilliant opportunities available.

If you've got young people looking to try something different, it's definitely worth checking out!

This tiny Teesside town hosts one of the biggest fairs in the UK 🎡

Yarm Fair has been running for over 800 years, and every October the whole High Street shuts down for it.

Three days of rides, lights, noise and food stalls, with the old Georgian buildings lined up behind it all. It’s a proper bit of Teesside tradition, and you can feel it the second you walk in.

It’s on this weekend, so there’s still time to get down. Something for the whole family, and it costs nothing to have a wander through.

I thought I knew Whitby. Turns out I really didn’t. 🎥

Over the past few months, I’ve spent a lot of time exploring Whitby while producing a new documentary, Voices of Nature.

We were commissioned to produce the film alongside the North York Moors National Park Authority, University of York and project partners, spending time filming around Whitby and, most importantly, talking to the people who actually live there.

And that completely changed how I saw the place.

Like a lot of people, I knew Whitby for the tourist side of it. The harbour, the shops, the abbey, crabbing with the kids and the thousands of people who descend on the town every summer.

But spend a bit of time with the people who live there and you discover a completely different Whitby.

We met some brilliant people who took us to the places they go to get outside, enjoy nature and escape the busy parts of town.

Those conversations also brought up some much bigger subjects.

Wildfires, accessibility, housing, young people, wildlife and the challenges of accessing nature were all part of the story people shared with us.

My job was then to take all of those different voices, locations and experiences and bring them together into one film.

I'm genuinely proud of how this one has turned out.

The finished documentary is designed to help make sure the experiences and opinions of the people who actually live in Whitby are heard and can help inform future decisions.

And now people can finally come and watch it. 🎬

There is 1 Screening left with space available :

📍 1 October 2026 – 5:00PM - 6:30PM Whitby Lobster Hatchery

If you live in Whitby, love the area or just want to see a side of the town you might not normally see, you’re welcome to come along.

Lots of people are asking for Castlegate Shopping centre footage so here you go! 😅

A year of demolition. 1100 feet of Castlegate Shopping Centre, filmed from start to finish. I keep getting asked what it actually looked like before it all came down, so here it is.

I bought my first drone just to document this properly and ended up flying 58 missions over the site across the year, watching the skyline change bit by bit. The curly wurly car park coming down 🏗️, the Swallow Hotel collapsing, even the old Heart of Stockton sign being ripped apart.

This is the complete demolition timelapse, plus a full walkaround of what it actually looked like inside before it came down.

Castlegate opened in 1973 and was a proper hub for the town for decades. Strange watching it disappear bit by bit, but what's there now speaks for itself. 🌳

This UK town just knocked down half its High Street 👀

Stockton Waterfront Park sits where Castlegate Shopping Centre used to be. Five acres of it, gone, around £40 million spent, it's one of the biggest town centre demolitions in the country.

What's there now is proper open green space running straight from the High Street to the river, connected for the first time ever. There's a land bridge tunnelling the road underneath it, a massive play park, an amphitheatre, and a six metre slide that drops you straight down to the waterfront if you can't be bothered with the steps.

The Teesside Princess is moored right there too if you fancy a cruise down to Yarm or Preston Park 🛥️

Nearly four years in the making. Stockton Waterfront Urban Park is worth every one of them.

Go check it out.👇

Stockton's Flea Market is hiding in plain sight 👀🛍️

Everyone keeps asking me where it is, and honestly it's right there if you know where to look.Tucked inside the ancient alleyways off Green Dragon Yard on Finkle Street, it's a little world of its own. Old maps, vintage toys, Lego, Star Wars memorabilia and stuff from pretty much every era you can think of, all at a fraction of what you'd pay anywhere else.

One of the stall owners pulled out an old toy gun with the little popper cartridges. I hadn't seen one of those since I was a kid.

I bring the kids most weeks and they always walk out with something. That's the thing about this place, you genuinely never know what you're going to find and it changes every single time you visit.

There's even a retro cafe right on the door if you fancy a brew while you're at it.

Free to get in. Go find it. 👇

Teesside’s Unofficial Zoo Hiding on Portrack Lane 🦎

I popped into Smiths Pets in Stockton for a quick browse and honestly didn’t expect to see this many animals in one place.

Inside there are lizards, snakes, spiders, tropical fish, stingrays, birds and loads more creatures you don’t usually get to see up close.

While we were there the staff started bringing some of the reptiles out to show the kids. They were letting them gently pet them while explaining loads of interesting facts about them. Not something you see every day.

One of the highlights for me was the huge aquarium area where you can watch stingrays gliding around the tanks alongside colourful tropical fish.

There are also birds and small mammals in another section, and pretty much everything you’d need to care for animals too.

If you’re interested in animals or just fancy seeing something a bit different in Teesside, Smiths Pets on Portrack Lane is definitely worth a visit.

Does anyone know about this hidden antique shop in Stockton? 👀

I was walking through Stockton and spotted this tiny doorway I’d never noticed before.

Inside is Al Ford’s Antiques, tucked away on Ramsgate right next to The Shambles on Stockton High Street.

The place is packed floor to ceiling with antiques. Paintings, lamps, bikes, old trains and all sorts of unique pieces. It honestly feels like stepping into another world.

A proper hidden gem in Stockton.

Have you ever been inside Al Ford’s?

There is something special about Hartlepool Headland when it’s quiet. 🌫️⚓

I love filming places that people don’t always talk about. While everyone heads to the Marina and Seaton Carew, the Headland is where the real history is. I spent the morning exploring the Heugh Battery Museum and wandering the backstreets, no crowds, just great views and that proper homely Teesside feel.

If you haven’t been for a while, this is your sign to go back. It’s exactly why I started Tees Explorer: to show what’s right on our doorstep that we sometimes overlook.
