I enjoy capturing patterns of light in nature and buildings when out on walks.🚶‍♀️ And also the occasional pet. 🐕

This will be my last post about Portugal in a while. I'm taking a break from social media for the holidays and then I'll restart with a series on something else. To end it in a delicious note, I'm leaving you with some pictures of Portuguese food. Merry Christmas and stuff! 🎄

In order of appearance:

- Caldo verde (shredded cabbage soup) and bifanas (pork sandwiches)
- Francesinha (a very caloric take on croque madame)
- Torrada e café (toast and expresso)
- Alheira (a sausage made of pork and bread)
- Bolo rei (king cake, a typical christmas fruit cake), baked by my dad!
- Batatas a murro (smashed roast potatoes)

Torre, which translates to "Tower", is the highest point in mainland Portugal. During winter, it features a couple of ski pistes and heavy snow, but on the rest of the year there's only a small restaurant and a shop. It's worth a visit nevertheless, perhaps even more than in winter, just to see the desolate landscape left over by the cold months.

The villages of Alentejo are a feast for the eyes, with pristine white walls contrasting with edges painted in vivid colours. The scorching heat of summer keeps everyone inside during most of daylight hours, which makes for haunting photographs, devoid of life. (Motrinos, Portugal)

When October comes around, Portuguese villages and cities see the arrival of roasted chestnut street vendors. The snack accompanies Magusto, a festivity that celebrates the arrival of autumn.

The chestnuts are usually roasted on open flames, with their peel still on, and sold by the dozen inside paper packets or newspaper wraps. They're loved by children and adults alike and are best when eaten piping hot, shared with a loved one, on a walk or sitting on a street bench. At the end, the only evidence of the crime are our fingers, charred with ashes from taking the peels off to get to the core.

Portugal is a country of wine, although most of it is sold internally. Most supermarkets have extensive wine sections exclusively dedicated to Portuguese wine.

A big exception in terms of international exports is wine from the region of Douro, where grapes for Port are planted (among others). The entire area is a beautiful collage of hills, slopes, bridges, cute towns and lovely light effects.

And the wine, of course, is great. 😜

Portugal, the country where I was born, has shown me beautiful towns, nature and people at every single turn.

I often hear of it as "the place with good weather for those who can't afford going to Spain", and honestly, it hurts my national pride a little. 😜 I want to show you that it is much more than that.

In the next few weeks, I'll be sharing photos of lesser known areas that I have taken across the years, when out and about. And maybe a bit of those that you may already be familiar with.

This photo depicts one of the doors to Monsaraz castle, a quaint little town perched on top of a hill in the Alentejo region. The surrounding villages have little to no light at night, which makes it the perfect zone for observing stars.

We visited in October, under the scorching heat of what the locals call "the quince summer", because it's when quinces are usually picked and it's a period of exceptional weather in the middle of autumn.

Seagulls flock to the beach while fishermen pull out fishing nets from the water, and tourists observe the scene. 🐟

I picked two photos for this one because I thought it could be interesting showing the queue of birds that formed on the other side. While a few of them waited, the rest approached the humans to try their luck.
