Today was the first proper outing with the new camera, so Scarborough’s South Bay became a bit of a testing ground.

Rather than concentrating on the bigger views, I found myself looking down at the rock pools, sandstone, pebbles and the patterns left behind by the tide. There’s an extraordinary amount of detail along this stretch of coast if you slow down and look for it.

This was also my first attempt at handheld focus stacking. I shot a sequence of frames with the focus moving through the scene, then combined them afterwards to keep detail from the foreground right through the deeper channel in the rock.

There’s definitely more experimenting to do, but I’m rather pleased with how this first attempt turned out. And it was a good way of getting to know what the new camera can do.

Sometimes photography really is just about looking a little closer.
