📸 Photographer Rights: Volunteering doesn’t mean giving up your work!

I know numerous people, charities and organisers have asked for help for free photography and do so daily.
Thats all fine and good but when they are not valuing what we do nor upholding their agreements, it really does suck the enjoyment out of helping others.

This is happening not only to myself with several separate clients but also to other photographers/videographers/friends that I know. And it's getting beyond frustrating for the photography community. Some have even left it altogether.

But heres the thing...

If you take photos for an organisation or charity on a volunteer basis, here is what the law says:

1️⃣ You still own the copyright: Under UK law, you automatically own the copyright the moment you take the photo—even if you did it for free.

2️⃣ Messages and conversations are contracts: Informal texts, DMs, or emails stating your terms (like requiring a photo credit) count as a binding agreement.

3️⃣ No credit = No photos: If they use your work but don't credit you as agreed, they are breaching your contract and your statutory Moral Rights.

The Bottom Line: If an organisation breaks the terms you agreed on, your permission is invalidated, and you have the legal right to demand they take your photos down and not to use them ever again. Don't let them overstep just because you volunteered.

😁 Great feeling when you come across your footage in the wild haha. Always interesting seeing where it ends up and how it is used.

Had a great day at Paradise Park ! It was amazing to see the passion and care from all the staff. I saw some beautiful, vibrant, and colorful birds. But my favorite had to be the Bald Eagle! Which I'm pretty sure posed for some of these photos ;D

I always think I've taken my favorite photo. And then I'll keep going through the album and change my mind! Either way, I don't think I've taken my favorite photo yet. I reckon it's still out there... waiting for me to stumble upon it.
Dragonflies have most certainly moved up the list of favorite creatures on this planet though! This dragonfly photo was taken at Five Acres Nature Reserve.

I am always learning something new on every shoot I go on. I never noticed how many colour variations and patterns dragonflies come in. Even on the tips of their wings. They are insanely beautiful and intricate.

I have fallen in love with dragonflies this last week. I haven't photographed many before. With this recent weather there as been many around.
They are interesting to observe and even more so when you get up close (which isn't easy!!)
I aim to capture more photos of them before the weather turns!
